Thinking of going from NFT to DWC or RDWC - thoughts?

Well, I just dry weighed this lot, and I mean proper dry. 15 oz give or take a few gms. Much better, and 3 of the 6 plants were dead or as good as. New 4 plants (from seeds) are in the RDWC system now. Let's see what happens.... (had my 1st rdwc issue almost immediately - a small clay pebble...

    is RDWC good for newbies?

To be fair, pics are fairly dull with NFT. This is the tank/s I use. GT424 Super common. £70 gets you the tank and the matting, and pump. Everything you need. Good fort a 4x4 tent. You put your plants in rockwool cubes directly on the toplayer (criss-crossed) - usually in spreader matting...

    is RDWC good for newbies?

I've grown in NFT tanks for ever, and they have to be the easiest Hydro there is. Self contained, no chance of leaks or overflowing, easy to maintain PH and EC. I'm about to try RWDC and whilst I'm excited, there are loads more things to watch out for judging by my research so far. Blockages...

Methods of monitoring pot water levels

lol - kids pool isn't such an insane idea! :-) I have an off the shelf RDWC system and it's quite a common arrangement - main tank pulls the water from the end pots, which pull from all the others.

Thinking of going from NFT to DWC or RDWC - thoughts?

Interesting indeed. WIll have to see if I have the patience for non-fem again. I might have to as I'm very much missing Mandala #1 and fem seeds are rare.

Methods of monitoring pot water levels

I think the return pump would not work as it would be sucking in air from all the pot "overflow" pipes which would be easier than sucking all that water through.

Methods of monitoring pot water levels

I know what will cause it, I just want to find out before it becomes a flooding issue. I'll look into copper

Methods of monitoring pot water levels

I guess you mean guazes? I think I found a cheap and simple solution: 7 of these: Just pop them on the lids and dangle the contact strip near the top of the bucket. I've already been told by a friend in a Hydro shop that I'll need to get used to reaching in each bucket periodically and...

    Rockwool Seed Germination Problem...Help

Tease them open from the top to check. It's easy with tweezers. Likely they are white and furry (mould) or nute burnt and dead. Either way, too much of everything. They are amazingly resilient little buggers as long as you don't let them dry out (even then, I've rescued teh odd one)

Methods of monitoring pot water levels

Just about to run my 1st RDWC setup. I'm usually an NFT guy. One big concern is flooding. I hear often of roots blocking recirc pipes and then the master pot, or one of the slaves overflows. This can't happen. Are there cheap ultrasonic depth sensor kits out there for all my pots ? or am I...

    Rockwool Seed Germination Problem...Help

I germinate always on tissue then transfer to rockwool. Tissue until the seed tail shows. Run rockwool under tap until it's all wet. Tease open existing hole in top of cube. Drop seedling in with tweezers, tail down, or ar least sideways. GENTLY / LOOSELY tease rockwool over top of hole...

Are these the start of bananas?

I can't tell from any of those photos. No signs I can see. When you get them, they are obvious, and you have plenty of time to remove them with tweezers if you check daily. I've had one lot where the plants hermied and seeded, but on other crops (different plants) the nanas contained nothing...

Thinking of going from NFT to DWC or RDWC - thoughts?

Been a fun process so far. I've now learnt something that suprise me and some that don't. I'm growing 600w HPS rather than my usual 800w at the wall blurples - flipping to flower on HPS creates much much more stretch than blurple LEDs. - The stretch creates bigger colas that at 1st are much...

    Have I got root rot?

Always rockwool. Small cubes to big cubes. The more I think about it the more it looks like a drowned the top plants. I've added a bubbler to the tank last night too. I've ordered a 6 pot RDWC system . Last night. Be a fun change . I've always loved nft for it's simplicity but always had...

    Have I got root rot?

Been growing NFT for many years. 1st time I've experienced this. Was doing housekeeping and noticed lots of dry deal leaves at the bottom of the canopy - not that unusual, then started noticing leaves that are wilted and black tipped and soft, all lower in the canopy. Then noticed a couple of...

reducing stretch in first weeks of bloom

There will surely be many ways of controlling stretch. The light type, I'm certain, is a large factor. My plants are now so tall that I've had to pull them away from the HPS so stop light burn. Same plants, different light. 1st time in many crops- all blurple before. My next lot - I'm going to...

reducing stretch in first weeks of bloom

Indeed - but I selected only the photos where there was stretch happening. I didn't want clips of nothing happening. As soon ast the stretching stopped, I stopped. Perhaps this shows the HPS stretching goes on for longer?

reducing stretch in first weeks of bloom

1st is HPS - current grow - had to do some serious bending to keep them from the light. The light is almost at max height already. Next up is the previous grow - same plants, Stretched on Blurple LED. The LEDS has plenty of scope for going higher. Finally, as the above was show after...

reducing stretch in first weeks of bloom

Interesting! I do indeed - I'll knock up two mini time lapses. Will take me half an hour.....

reducing stretch in first weeks of bloom

Lighting spectrum. Lighting spectrum categorically, in my experience, has a HUGE effect on stretch. I know this because I grow the same plants (cuttings from mother) many times, and I've recently been switching between veg MH, then flower Blurple (Mars) LED, OR, veg MH , then flower HPS. I'm...
