k is for per thousand lumens , u need as many as u can get, a 400 watt hps is about 50/60k lumens so3k is somewhat short of a decent amount of light, if ur gonna make the effort u need a good light source i.e 400/600 watt hps and a ballast to run it cost roughly £100 but its a must for good...
