Would just painting the outside buckets black suffice? I was aware that roots do not like light I just didn't know it would be a problem with a bucket in a bucket so two buckets blocking light...that is how my systems set up

Definitely blow over the air cooled reflector. It will save your fans life instead of break in a few years or less. I go from hepa filter outside to six inch ducting to my fan then six in ducting blowing through my two 600w sealed reflectors to six in ducting and i throw a muffin fan in there...
