here are some thoughts, sometimes plants can be over/under watered and over/under nuted.
imagine taking a 2liter bottle and cutting off the top, then purchasing a very cheap and course filter that can be placed in the center of the bottle. nothing fine so that roots can freely grow thru filter.
as far as mounting the filter, there would lots of different ways, which i dont need to describe...use ur imagination it cant be harder than growing bud anyway.
before putting soil mix in top of bottle, put water w. nutes in the bottom half of bottle just below the filter area. the place soil mix on top.
as the roots grow, they will surpass the filter and reach the water. reduce watering of soil (not completely). as the roots get longer and surpass a 1-2cm, lower the water level an inch so that the water just touches the tips of roots. lower the water level by creating small holes (width of pencil) along the perimeter of the bottle just beneath the filter section. this will allow u to tilt the bottle a bit and release some water, also creating an air pocket. w. many holes along the perimeter, the fan you have blowing will be able to pump good air into the bottle giving the roots oxygen which is reduced significantly in soil (thus hydroponics was created). as the roots get longer, keep lowering the water level to force them to grow more and creating more of a pocket to give the roots O2.
i attached a diagram i drew....what do ppl think? i thought this up just tonight since im going to be starting a new plant soon.
