At least three middle and elementary schools will be shuttered next year for "unacceptable performance," Education Department officials confirmed yesterday.
Middle School 44 on Manhattan's upper West Side will not enroll a sixth-grade class next year and will be phased out within 2-1/2 years, an Education Department spokeswoman said.
A new middle school will replace it starting next year.
Public School 225 in Rockaway Park, Queens, and PS 90 in Morrisania, the Bronx, also will close, sources said.
Some students at MS 44 were upset to hear the news, which their parents will be officially notified of in a letter tonight.
"It sucks, because kids need to go to school, and they shouldn't be shutting any down," said Whitney Shriner, an MS 44 student.
Several others said the school was chaotic and unsafe.
"I'm glad they're not bringing in more kids," said 13-year-old Michael, who goes to the school and did not want to give his last name. "They can't even control the students we have now."
MS 44 has been on the state's "persistently dangerous" list for two years.
The school scored a B on its report card two years ago, but last year it sank to a D. Only 21% of the roughly 284 students read and write at grade level, and just 38% are making it in math.
PS 90's more than 1,100 students made significant progress over the past two years. In 2007, 37% of students read at grade level and 58% were up to par in math. Last year, those numbers rose to 47% in English and 75% in math. But the improvement was not enough, compared with other schools considered similar by the Education Department.
About 42% of PS 225 students read and 63% did math at grade level.

Fault? There is no "fault." This has been done by design. The goal of the Progressives IS mediocrity ... all pigs equal, except those pigs who are in charge.

The government monopolized school systems are not about education. They are about indoctrination.

Yeah, my kid has a hell of a hard time with math, and they basically expect the parent to do the homework with them, and teach them.I'm not a fucking teacher, and my kid understands me better than them.Get this...instead of teaching them to solve the problem and get the proper answer by the most direct route, or the algorithm method we were taught, now they try to teach them "Why" they are solving the problem, and make a chart and a graph to do simple fucking math. So, taking it from like three steps to about 10.Fucking ridiculous. They say"But kids understand it better when they know why they're doing it." Bullshit. You're doing it to solve the problem, period. The unnecessary steps....:roll:just crack open a math book and see how our children are being confused.
