I have been doing this: 18/6 for 6 weeks, one week at 16/8,then one week at 14/10, then 12/12.
When I do this, it seems to trigger the plants into preflower quickly and the plants tend to stop growing in height, and and focus their metabolism on develope budding sites. In nature it doesn't go from 18/6 to 12/12 in one day.
It is a gradual progression that the plants seem to thrive on.
give it a try.

I think I am going to do the same gradual decrease until 12/12 like you posted.

Cool, yeah give it a shot. Let us know how it worked for you.
Another thing I do is take it down to 10/14 in the last week or so of flowering to simulate late autumn. This helps them ripen quicker. Then I go 2 days in the dark for increased resin production. Then I cut.

I made the mistake of going from 18/6 to 12/12 suddenly. My plants shot up 4" in 24 hours (no shit). My tops looked like they were trying to grab hold of my 42watt cfls! Of course, I've made every single nube mistake I've ever heard of and several I'll never mention. I'll also never post pics of my current plants, currently at 34" tall, as I'm terribly afraid of the ridicule it'll cause me.

I have learned a great deal lurking here, and for that I say "Thanks!" to all the peeps here.
