1st time grow are they ready for flower do i need larger pots???

hi everyone. ive been lurking on this site every since i stated my 1st grow. its been six weeks now and i think they may be ready to flower. largest is 13" but my questions are will it be more beneficial to me if i were to move them to larger pots before flowering? will there be any negative effects if i choose to transplant after flowering period has started? can i just leave them in their current 6" pots for their entire life? i've seen sog grows where growers keep their plants in smaller pots but don't know if i can do the same since i am growing from seed. after i finish this grow i would lie to implement the sg technique once ive found suitable plants to clone from.

Thanks, ive been waiting because i don't know if i should transplant to larger pots before "flipping the switch". the largest one has become a greedy bitch and needs feeding every other day which i don't mind because i would rather keep them in the pots they are in now i just don't know if it will hinder my results.

oh.. well yeah. I always transplant mine before switching them over to flowering.

This gives the plant more root development room.. for when it starts actually flowering.

Once a plant begins flowering.. it goes rootbound like crazy.. and it needs all the room it can get..

with that said.. don't put them in too big of a pot.. because if you have space limits.. you'll want to choose the correct sized pot.

I mean I would personally transplant them to bigger pots and give it a few more weeks veg but not sure you have the space for that or the lighting and really its not that big of a deal to be honest, since its your first grow id say go ahead and flip em now - you wont regret it either way. Your results would likely not be that different if you transplanted them but if you did it and then started flowering right away they would only love you for it especially since you say the one is really hungry it wouldn't at all be a bad thing however its not something which you absolutely must do - additionally its not something which will necessarily be beneficial however there is no risk risk of it being harmful. If you can spare the time, space, and effort then by all means put them in something around 3.5 gallons or so and give it a week and then flip em.

Thank you both for your advice. im leaning towards doing the transplant. my grow area is 6x12 but im not using the area. the way i have my lights they currently can only cover about 4 feet which is enough for the 12 plants i currently have in 8" wide pots. the problem that i believe im going to run into is if i transplant to the larger pots which are 12" wide i won't have enough light to cover all the plants. i currently have 24 100 watt cfls with lumen output of 1750 each and 1 200 watt cfl not sure how many lumens. will this be enough to flower 12 plants? bare in mind that i am growing from seed so there will be additional space available once males have been weeded out.

I think your plants would do well staying in those pots, but do as you must. either is good

ya youll be fine just to stay in those pots it really wouldn't make that much of a difference if you transplant them even if you did have the space and the lights for it (which it sounds like you dont) - go ahead and just keep them in those pots unless your prepared to add more lighting, space, and veg a lil longer - but why complicate things - just get your first grow under your belt and get it underway cause you will do pretty good if you keep them as they are the difference if you transplant will be very minor. You will learn the difference one day soon and you'll see how marginal it is and that you made the right choice. They could be borderline root bound in the end but you should make it to harvest with no problems.

As for the CFLs, its gonna be enough for flower but if you thrown in an HPS or 2 you'll probably see a better yeild. And remember they're gonna close to double in size after you make the switch to 12/12

assuming you keep the temps in check the only way you could have too many cfls is if you had more than 1 bulb 2 inches from every leaf (impractical) and just imagine they will be double that size so thats a lot of lights, understand that all artificial light disapates very rapidly while the sun lights the whole plant evenly - your going to want as many cfl bulbs as possible or 1 or 2 HPS lights to get the best results and the best yield. If you worried about the power bill invest in a digital hps ballast, bulb, and hood. It is the magnetic ballast that suck massive ammounts of power while the digital ones use very little.

it does depend on how big you want your plants to be,
personally id like to keep it under 2 feet when it start flowering,
but from these 2 pictures you've provided, it looks like its fine in these pot.
why didnt you go hydro? just wondering,..

thanks for all the advice. i decided not to transplant and went ahead and flipped the switch last night i hope all goes well. ive been thinking of getting a hps when i get the funds together. local hydro store has a 150 watt for $90 or should i get more watts?

I've seen people grow some really beast trees with 150 watts on here, do a little research to help you feel more comfortable. If it were up to me I'd go for whatever works financially. like if there was a 150watt for $90 and a 250 watt for $99 of course I'd get the 250. I haven't seen any difference in yield with people who use 150watts and 1000watts. look how good your plants are looking just with those cfls, just get a 150 watt and use a cfl combo.

transporting them to a larger pot is a good idea... those pots look like mine from target a while back... while the yield was okay I often wished I had something just larger because the flowering would have been better with larger pots...
