300 watt Halogen Bulb at 2900k?

I found out 'that' bright ass lamp in my house is actually a 300 watt halogen light rated at about 2900k. It about 4-5 inches long and is double sided. It gets hot but I have a couple fans by my closet.

I'm in the first week of veg, just started sprouting. Can I use this light if I keep it cool in there or is that not good for it at all?

I'd rather not have to buy an hps if I can just use this...Please everyone give me your opinion.

2900k is right around where an HPS lamp would be. In fact, I'm sure a CFL grower might spot this post in the folder you placed it in and respond.

well, the halogen light is actually quite a good growing light,spectrum vise.

but, its terribly inefficient (500w lamp is about 9000 lumens i think or so)

and runs very hot, even compared to hps (about 3-4 times hotter)

but if you can keep it cool , its allright for the plants.

Sorry man, but a tungsten halogen lamp is totally inefficient for growing weed. They produce more heat than light. Halogens are like big incandescents, they have tungsten filament that's expensive to operate. They run in the far red spectrum.

Ok so... You'd be better off saving yourself the electric bill and getting a $60 sunsystem 150w HPS

well, its not as bad as that, for the plants, that is.

but.

you´d be better off with a 150w hps yes, actually with a 70w one.

what are your intentions with this grow?

ive never seen a mj grow with halogen, just know its spectrum is fine for plants. (its not great, its just "allright" will grow them and not harm them as long as you can keep the plant cool, and it hasnt got a lot of light for all those watts, and is so hot, you cant keep the lamp close, so you are limited in plant size)

you´d be going experimental somewhat.

but if you are wanting any smoke for sure, then you´d want that hps (or mh or cfl)

might get some smoke, its your electricity and time (and house (its 1000c hot, that bulb) if i remember correctly))

Yeah you could probably use it just fine, it's just more expensive in the long run for the amount of weed you get.

Right on the fire extinguisher . U must not understand just how much heat they put off , just touching the fixture will burn your ass . Get some 6500k cfls . I'd use halogen for a heater b4 I,d use it for light .

Don't go anywhere near halogens for growing.

I have halogens as ceiling lights - four small 50W bulbs in a line. The white paint on the ceiling burnt brown within hours of putting it up and the room is the only one I don't need a heater on in during most of the winter.

Word. I will not use it for sure. Thanks everyone for talking me out of it. I'm think just an hps. Where could I get that? Menards? Lowes? Will the have nice hps bulbs?

Are you any good with wiring or google? (lol)... I bought a 70w HPS security light at lowes for $30.. make your own reflector and re-wire it for external ballast (also have to wire it on to a plug). Ooor sunsystem makes a 150w for like $60.. check out HTG supply if u can order online

Awesome! Thank daisy! I'll just shop around for the best hps deal in my area. What are the things called that I plug the bulbs into? (so I know what to look for)

you need a mogul socket/base... needs to be rated for the pulse required by an hps (I want to say 5KV.. but not completely sure right now)...any reputable store or hydro shop will know. they run about $10

Ok, I got some 100watt equivalent cfl bulbs today. I just bought sockets with plugs attached to them and some extension cords. $23 altogether. Not bad. I also saw some mh and hps bulbs for around $15-30. Not bad either. Looks like I'm on my way now!
