After reading through the forums here I've designed a grow box I hope to build in the near future. It's an Indica scrog stealth build. I may not do this right away as even if I build it my concern is location and security so I would need to ensure proper wiring, fire prevention, and stealth above all.
Here's a pic of what I'm thinking although this shows 8 COBS which for me would be a future upgade.
Materials:
3x3x6 cabinet grow box
3x3x6 shelf
Trim - to support shelf
Cross bar for hangers
1x GrowBright 6" Inline Duct Fan
6'' duct Flange, flow valve, cap, vent
2x Surge protectors (high joule rating)
Extension chord
Smoke alarm
Temp/Humidity sensor
Carbon filter
Metal zip ties
High strength nylon rope
Lights
White paint
Seeds
Available gfci breaker and min 15A fuse
*15A breaker = 1800w max
*CFL OPTIONS*
4x 42w 6500k cfl bulbs for Veg
4x 42w 2700k cfl bulbs for Flower
2' florescent ballast (2x bulbs @48w)
2x 2' 6500k florescent bulbs - Veg
2x 2' 2700k florescent bulbs - Flower
#low heat/power/cost
#poor light penetration
#low yield/more time
*LED OPTIONS*
Cree cxa3070 COB LED - 80 cri AD, AB, or Z4 bin (117w max)
4x 6500k or 5000k for Veg
4x 2700k or 3000k for Flower
2x driver (Meanwell HLG-185H-C1050)
*driven 2x in series for ~98w each @1.04a
4x Alpine 11 GT heatsinks
Arctic MX4 Thermal compound
Kapton tape
100k Potentiometer
16-18ga Insulated Wire
Quick release connections
#low heat - driver and heat sink would be external to the grow chamber and can be vented seperately with an inline fan blowing across them
#high lumen output/variable spectrum
#higher cost
#tap mounting holes for the COB holder so that the chips can be removed and replaced
* I would Top each plant after 4th node, let 3 new nodes grow and Top again; after 2 more nodes I would Fim while starting LST for a scrog where it has even bushy canopy and trimmed entirely below the screen. This maximizes growth for each cola, and the smaller size is better for the small space to limit heat stress and improve light penetration. This also allows easy access to watering and checking soil.
* If I ran 4x@ ~49w per driver I can get 196w LED total, decreasing build cost by +$70 for 1 less driver and only 532w total with the red cfl.
* If I ran 1 per driver @115w each I would gain almost 68w total, increasing build cost by +$140 for 2 more drivers. 796w system total.
Build:
4X Red COB @98w each w/ 4x 42w Blue CFL+4x 42w Red CFL for Flowering!
2x HLG-185H-C1050B $140
4x Alpine 11 GT heatsinks $45
4x Cxa3070 COB 3000k AD bin $190
Kapton tape $10
Arctic MX4 Thermal compound $10
4x 45w CFL 6500k $60
4x 45w CFL 2700k $60
1 gal flat white paint $20
Metal zip tie $5
100k potentiometer $2
GrowBright 6" High Velocity Inline Fan $100
GrowBright Pure Flow 6 XXL Carbon Filter
$140
50' 16-18ga Insulated Wire $5
*Cabinet (build/buy) $100?
Northern Lights seeds $60
Output= 560w (728w with +4x 2700k cfl)
Total cost= less than $1000
Power consumption:
392w LED 3000K
168w CFL 6500K
168w CFL (Flowering)
110w inline fan
6.24w cpu fans
Usage= 844.24w total (with 2700k cfl)
Schedule
1) Germinate seeds and let them have normal light until the first set of leaves grow. On week 2 start seeds under 24/7 4x 6500k CFL total of 168w for 1 week.
2) On the 3rd week turn on 4x 3000k CXA3070 LED COB's dimmed to 50% for +196w for 1 week (364w total). When plant is ready begin Topping around 3rd-4th week and let plant recover.
2a) Turn clipping into clone and put into 12/12 once it roots as a way to determine sex early. Keep it as a backup, part of a continuous harvest, or keep it as a mother.
Top again and begin scrog while plant is still young but developed.
3) On the 4th week turn light to 18/6 to start veg and wait for plant to be ready to Top again. Turn driver to 75% for +294w for 1 week. (=462w total)
4) At week 5 turn driver to 100% for 392w LED + 168W CFL (=560w). After week 5 begin setting up for active and FIM the plant when ready then let the plant recover. Let veg for 3 weeks, trim lower fan leaves to shape canopy.
5) At week 8 install +4x 2700k CFL for +168w (=728w total). Allow the plants to begin flowering using 12/12 and tuck each cola under the screen to LST. Continue Flowering for 3 weeks.
6) At week 11 reduce light to 10/14 for 1 week and begin flushing in preperation for harvest.
7) During week 12 do not water for the last 5 days before harvest and let the plant sit in complete darkness for 24hrs. Cut, hang to dry, trim, cure in paper bag for 2 weeks, then cure in glass jar for 2-3 weeks mixing 2x each week. Enjoy!
Expected efficiency:
From seed to harvest approx 84-90 days or every 3 months.
