5 million strong to petition Obama to legalize weed

This group is created for the sole purpose of helping to further the reform of marijuana laws in this new administration.
"5 million strong to petition Obama to legalize weed" It is serious problem that puts innocent people in jail for carrying a harmless herb!!! OBAMA was originally for the decriminalization of marijuana but, soon after talking to his advisers he changed his position. We hope Obama will stand for what he first said and probably believes in himself. Our goal is to further the rights of all Americans and follow in the example of so many other great countries such as Holland, Canada, Australia ect... I strongly believe the statement made by Jimmy Carter when he said, "Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself."

A Facebook group organised by the US campaigning organisation NORMAL is aiming to get 5 million members to pressure Obama to legalise marijuana. They say:
"OBAMA was originally for the decriminalization of marijuana but, soon after talking to his advisers he changed his position. We hope Obama will stand for what he first said and probably believes in himself".
They suggest that President Obama should instead take the advice of ex President Jimmy Carter; "Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself."

• Obama on marijuana: "I inhaled ... frequently."

I do not see a petition any where but http://norml.org is in charge of the facebook group. Maybe once the amount of people is reached the petition will be given to the group?

Not sure if this is the same petition but it's being done by Norml.org
http://www.change.org/norml/actions/view/tell_your_representative_to_support_federal_marijuana_law_reform

I'm writing to urge your support for common sense marijuana law reform.

Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank, along with co-sponsor Texas Republican Ron Paul, has introduced legislation to limit the federal government's authority to arrest and prosecute minor marijuana offenders.

The measure, entitled an "Act to Remove Federal Penalties for Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults," would remove federal sanctions for minor marijuana offenses -* making the prosecutions of these offenses strictly a state matter.

Otherwise law-abiding citizens who use marijuana responsibly are not part of the crime problem, and we must stop treating them like criminals under federal law. According to nationwide polls, three out of four voters agree that adults who possess marijuana should not face arrest or jail, and one out of two now believe that cannabis should be regulated like alcohol.

Once again, I urge you to support the passage of this act, and I hope that you will consider co-sponsoring this important legislation.
