50w-100W HPS, Can it go into a regular light socket??

I was shopping at Lowes today for some CF's and I came across some HPS bulbs. The 400w bulbs Male part was huge and I knew I would need a ballest. But couldnt find one. BUT..... the lower wattage ones would be able to fit into my regular sockets. Now the question is can I use these without installing a special fixture and just take out my CFL and use a 100w HPS and MH light.

Man I tried this years ago and you DO have to have a ballast which sucks but yeah sorry bro..

Sometimes they even blow up, wouldn't recommend trying it.

No don't stop wait bad idea.

It seemed like it wouldn't work or i would have heard of more people doing it. I just really kinda got my hopes up. It woulda have been great for me
