I need to get a 6" fan for a cool tube.. Are you guys really paying $80-$100 just for one of these?? I guess I need an inline duct fan? Never set up a cool tube or a air cooled hood before.. Is there anything similar I can get cheaper at like Menards or Homedepot?

$100 the first time, or $50 the first time, then $100 later when your temps are too high and you need the better fan?

i paid GBP 70 for a 5inch roughly $100 which takes care of my exhaust / filter

and GBP 90 for a high powered 6inch roughly $150 to run my aircooled hood.

You pay for a better fan so that it works right, and it does what it is supposed to -- keep your room cool. And yes, you will need an inline duct fan. I haven't looked in Menards or HD, so I really have no idea what they sell, but I doubt they will have a quality inline fan.

try ebay. there are lots of different bargains on there, remember if you use it to only buy from someone with good feedback.
and remember you might need a speed controller too, to keep noise down.

i could post you some links from ebay but just have a butchers hook yourself.

Got one for 25 on amazon. 250CFM duct booster fan. Had to wire it myself since it didn't have a cord so that added a few bucks to it. It's fairly quiet (it's just on top of the ceiling in the attic) and I can feel massive suction on the open end of my cooltube.

Apparently it's no longer sold... hmm..
This is it though: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007N5LI6

Works perfect in my application. 5-6F above intake temps.

It wont produce enough pressure to push through a carbon filter. I tried.
