A fish story by BCbuddy

Hey guys I had an experience over the last few days and i thought i would share it. I live on the west coast of Canada where the fishing is abundant. I often take my dog for walks near this one big river we have. It is a long drive to get out there in the boonies and then it's a 20 minute walk to the fishing hole. The hole is a pool of water between two rapids and it's deep and lovely green. I was there about a week ago for the first time this season and I immediately noticed that some big fish were jumping. I could not see what kind of fish but figured they were early spawning salmon, maybe 4-6 pounds.

I have been a fisherman all my life but have not fished nearly enough or as much as I used to back in the day. I still have alot of equipment but it's mostly for bass and trout. I don't really have alot of salmon gear. Anyways I accessed this situation and decided I would come out here gain very soon with some gear to catch one of these beauties.

Two days later... I showed back up at this spot with a couple fat joints, me and my dog. all I brought was a small fly fishing rod and some wet flies. I waded out until I reached the shoal before the dropoff and began casting my fly into the deep spot ot the pool while big salmon were jumping out in the middle. I saw that it would be much easier to cast to the fish from the other side but a strong current and deep water held me back. After not a bite for 30 minutes and snagging my line on the bottom trying to get to the fish holding deep, I packed up and went home.

Yesterday was a different story. The night before yesterday I found a sturdier trout rod and attached a small trout reel that i spooled with 40 lb test, just to be sure because I had no idea what size these fish were. Thank god I did this. So I packed up all my shit, buncha weed and my pipe and headed out to the river again. After casting from the same area over and over and getting nothing while they jumped and splashed I realized I have to just man the F*&% up and take my shirt, shoes, wallet and everything off and swim across this river with my rod in the air and my dog in tow.

I reached the bank about 20 yards from the cool dark hole and proceeded up the bank through the woods, being quiet as to not scare the fish. After about 8-10 casts, 10 minutes or so I hooked one!! It was devastationally strong and pulled extremely hard, making these fast runs and jumping/splashing at the surface. I now have this fish on and I'm realizing that my 4-6 lb guess was wayyy off because this thing felt and looked big. It took me 15 minutes of heart-pounding, careful playing, nailbiting craftsmanship to tire this thing out while maintaining control with a small rod meant for small fish. I had to keep the drag fairly loose in order to not break the rod, letting it run, then slowly forcing it towards me while reeling.

I eventually pooped it out and landed it on shore with my dog having a fit over the whole deal. I then had to take my belt off, loop it through the fishes gills and swim back across towing the salmon, ripped out of my mind throughout this entire ordeal. GOOD DAY :D

The fish is a spring salmon weighing in at 12.6 pounds and the second pic is of the spot, taken the day before. #1 is the spot from the first day #2 is the spot I caught it from #3 is approx where I hooked it... and the third pic is the POS rod I used to catch the beast.

Taking a coho from the ocean on the fly is the best shit out there  I need a boat again so I can get out there and not just river fish. Anyone else do any fishing?
