Air prune prior to placing in hydro?

I've done many searches and only vague results come up. What's your take on air pruning? Do many of you use this technique prior to placing your cubes in hydro? Do you think the delay of putting them in hydro is worth the awesome lateral root growth? Or do you think it's faster/better to just transfer them when the roots start showing at the bottom? I think this is a really good technique that does not seem to be common in this industry of horticulture. Let's open the discussion because after all, we grow for the roots, right?

About a month ago I had ten seedlings in rooter cubes and went to place them in a homemade hydro tub.
I didn't have the jets placed right and missed the bottom of the net pot. I air pruned by accident.
After a couple days they started growing back.

Anyway here is a root shot from my cabinet journal. They are a month old now. I figure it will be something to compare to.

This is my first shot at aeroponics.
So I dont know what they would have looked like if they were not air pruned.

.

Are those new lateral white roots coming from above due to the air pruning? Or were they already there?

I really am surprised there is not much discussion on this. Maybe it should be in the advanced growing section?

Actually I am not sure. as you can see I grow in a shallow tub. Thats why I am here. I would like to know how I can shorten the length of the roots while maintaining a large canopy.
