SEOUL — North Korea bombarded a South Korean island with dozens of artillery shells Tuesday in one of the fiercest attacks on its neighbor since the Korean War ended in 1953.
South Korean broadcaster YTN said at least 200 North Korean shells hit Yeonpyeong island, killing two soldiers and setting up to 70 houses ablaze. Most of the shells landed on a South Korean military base there, YTN reported.
South Korea returned fire and scrambled F-16 fighter jets, military officials said.
However, North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency said that South Korea fired first, Reuters reported.
North Korea later threatened to continue launching "merciless" strikes against South Korea if it violates their disputed sea border by "even 0.001 millimeter."
Newsweek: Powerful generals fuel Asian arms race
The clash came amid South Korean military drills in the area. North Korea's military had sent a message to South Korea's armed forces early Tuesday to demand that the drills stop, but the South continued them, according to an official at South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.
During the drills, South Korean marines on the island shot artillery toward southern waters, away from North Korea, the official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of military rules.

The skirmish also follows high tension over North Korea's claim that it has a new uranium enrichment facility and just over a month after North Korean leader Kim Jong Il unveiled his youngest son Kim Jong Un as his heir apparent.
YTN television said dozens of houses were on fire on Yeonpyeong, about 75 miles west of the capital Seoul. The station broadcast pictures of thick columns of black smoke rising from the island. Screams and chaotic shouts could be heard on the video. YTN said between 1,200 and 1,300 people live on the island.
"Houses and mountains are on fire and people are evacuating. You can't see very well because of plumes of smoke," a witness on the island told YTN before the shelling ended after about an hour. "People are frightened to death."
YTN quoted a witness as saying fires were burning out of control.
Yeonpyeong, which houses military installations and a small civilian population, is located off the west coast of the divided peninsula near a disputed maritime border. The area has been the focus of two previous deadly battles between the Koreas.
'Intentional and planned attack'
South Korea responded by firing K-9 155 mm self-propelled howitzers, but a South Korean official declined to say whether North Korean territory was hit.
"This is an intentional and planned attack," Lee Hong Ki, a South Korean defense ministry official, told reporters.
South Korea's military said two soldiers were killed in the attack, 17 were wounded and three civilians were also hurt.
The two Koreas are still technically at war — the Korean War ended only with a truce — and tension rose sharply early this year after Seoul accused the North of torpedoing one of its navy vessels, killing 46 sailors.
The White House said it "strongly condemns the attack" and called on Pyongyang to "halt its belligerent action."
In a statement, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said the U.S. "is firmly committed to the defense of our ally, the Republic of Korea, and to the maintenance of regional peace and stability."
U.S. military officials told NBC News that American forces were not involved in the clash. However, the Pentagon was monitoring the situation closely.

The U.S. military has about 29,000 personnel stationed in South Korea, NBC News reported.
President Lee Myung Bak ordered officials to "sternly respond" to North Korea's action but also called on officials to make sure that the "situation would not escalate," according to a presidential official. He asked not to be identified, citing the issue's sensitivity.

Dude they have been at war since the 1950's and between then and now they had only called for a cease fire so this is not a new war starting its just an old one hitting the play button. Anyways South Korea was asking for it.

And they've been at war with the USA for over 50 years as well. South Korea did not deserve to be attacked, North Korea surely attacked unprovoked. Their government is plain despicable, the reason they were doing drills in the first place was because North Korea has been getting increasingly aggressive as time passed.

If I tell someone not to touch my bong and they decide to test me by touching my bong I will fucking punch them in the face. To me this is the same thing the North tells the South not to sail their ships through the area that is under dispute, but instead the South decides to do it. So the North punches their little island in the face. See same thing.

Don't fear I lived in South Korea for about 4 years and love the place, but fair is fair.

Naw, N. Korea is a speck of fly shit on the world scene, We need to reign in Israel, they will be the ones starting WWIII, them or the Chinese. We may get hit by some rogue assholes with a small tactical nuke, but WWIII will be caused by Israel bombing Iran, then the Chinese/Russians will jump in then here we go.

What hole have you been in. That's all the hell they did when 43 south koreans were killed Wake up and read DA
That wasn't all that was done. New sanctions were passed and N Korea was condemned by the United Nations. If the north continues to ratchet up the provocations, it's likely we are going back to war on the peninsula. In the meantime, what more would YOU have done?

You are off... WWIII was started on 09/11/2001. It just hasn't escalated wildly, yet. It will take another violent incident, perhaps the bombing of Iran, but I doubt that.

The North is the Chinese...whether or not all sides agree on that is besides the point. The fact of the matter is that the Chinese have backed up NK, and this is no different. This is in China's backyard, but I don't think that they are looking for conflict...quite the opposite actually because that would be the one thing China knows they would get their asses handed to themselves in an armed conflict. There is a lot of potential here for serious conflict, this is bigger than the Russian/Georgian flare up awhile ago.

I will be watching this with the bug-outs ready...

So, where you gonna go?? If the big one starts, you'll either die immediately, later from radiation poisoning, or starve to death in the wilderness or be eaten by wild animals. I prefer the immeadiate death syndrome, no worries here, drop the bomb right on top of my house. I sure as hell don't want to die from radiation poisoning, or be all alone in the wilderness, but actually, I'll have no worries, Las Vegas is a nuke storehouse, Nellis AFB has a few thousand tactical nukes stored there, one direct hit and southern Nevada will be a smoking crater.

Now will you please tell me it worked to write letters put sanctions on people who give a shit less. I would bet if you ran a couple stealth fighters and elimate there nuclear plant they would be willing to talk on our terms.

Good luck. I think you will be ok though at least for now. N korea isn't going to invade yet and S. Korea and the U.S. Cant and Wont retaliate.
Why do you keep posting that crap, you Have no idea what you're talking about. Weren't you the one claiming the north had mortars that could fire shells to hit targets 100 miles away? stop talking already. Korea with the backing of the U.S. is MORE than capable of defending against an attack from the north. With one of the worlds largest air forces with advanced fighters compared to the norths soviet era craft. The north has more tanks but again they're from the soviet era similar to what Iraq had before the first gulf war. In terms of machinery and capability south korea has the worlds 12 strongest military, the north is ranked 20th http://www.globalfirepower.com/. The south has major industrial centers to help it sustain it's war machine. The ROK military has better training, logistics, moral, supplies and weapons....but according to you that means nothing lol The united states has several large military bases in southeast asia and over 20k marines sitting in japan for this very reason. The US is obligated to back up the ROK via mutual defense treaty. Seriously know wtf you're talking about or stfu, your posts are filled with ignorance.

This is not about the Chinese, although they'd rather have a communist north korea on their boarder then a U.S. backed reunited Korea. If there was open war between the north and ROK/U.S. the Chinese know they would start ww3 by sending their own troops into the mix, which is NOT what they want. Imo China is not interested in building a world empire, they already have vast resources and enough people to worry about. A long history of invasions by neighbors and the unresolved tension with North Korea have prompted South Korea to allocate 2.6% of its GDP and 15% of all government spending to its military, while maintaining compulsory conscription for men. All South Korean males are constitutionally required to serve in the military, typically for a period of two years. South Korea has the world's sixth largest number of active troops, the world's second-largest number of reserve troops and the eleventh largest defense budget. The Republic of Korea, with a regular military force numbering 3.7 million regular personnel among a total national population of 50 million people, has the second highest number of soldiers per capita in the world.

South Korea
Active: 687,000
Reserve: 8,000,000
Backed by the US 8th army 20k troops
20k Marines in Japan

North Korea
Active: 1,106,000
Reserve: 8,200,000

The allied forces have MUCH better equipment, moral, training, logistics and modern technology on their side.
