Bending them over like that is an extremely efficient way of both gtting strong light to very branch, and keeping the canopy lower.
Ive done this for 25 years, or more. I also dont top, and most of the time, look for strains that Stretch a lot, after flip, as this can save of veg time.
I start seeds/clones out under 1000w HID. From Start, to Finish. In either 18oz Solo Cups, or 32oz Uline Deli Containers.
After a good root system is built, I transplant into 5 gallon containeers, and veg 45---70 days, then transplant into 20 gallon containers.
With the right plant/strain, ( 2010 Barneys Farm G13 x Haze ) and long veg, I can get 22oz from 1 plant under 1x 1000w Hortilux HPS, bend over in this fashion.
I also keep a slight breeze 24/7, and will give them a bit of a shake, or 2 everyday, to strengthen branches. I dont mess with the growing tip, unless I want to slow it down.
Bending like this, turns the secondaries, into a main. All the secondary growth, will get as strong of light, as the growing tip, if left untrained.
