An excuse for the landlord...

So my grow is going great, I'm getting ready fro my first harvest and then it will be a perpetual grow...

Lots of adjustments and tweaking, dropping large amounts of cash on gear to get it all just right. But it has paid off and I have a grow I am proud of.

But my landlord will be doing a yearly inspection in a few months, he says it is to "replace the fire alarm batteries". Sounds good and my landlord has been very respectful of my privacy. I even needed him to drop something off once, and he didn't want to come by unless I was at the house.

My grow is a detached garage, he has seen it before when it was decked out as a woodworking shop. I think he will very likely not ask to look in there, but what if he does? Tearing down before the inspection is not an option. I was thinking that I could tell him that my girlfriend, and artist, has taken over the shop for a couple of months and won't let anyone in, not even me until she is finished. I think that sounds pretty reasonable. But this is pretty serious business and this is the only weak link in my op.

What other things could I say, if he asks about the shop, that would absolutely keep him out without raising questions or suspicion?

Tell him you have a couple of spider monkeys in there and you haven't figured how you're going to knock them out to get rid of them. Ask for suggestions.

Dude, that girlfriend art studio privacy lie is fcuking brilliant!
As long as he has the right personality to respect that, then that should fly perfectly, well done and good luck.

Then you tell him he needs to sign a release saying that he was warned that the monkeys were hostile and any missing limbs he looses is property of said monkeys.

i would just lock it and dont talk about it. if he asks to go in say you dont have the keys right now because you wife has them or something. he probably wont care.

Alright i think the girlfriend art studio thing is an amazing cover up. but make sure that you cover up the windows or anything that goes looks in so that he will not even be tempted. and keep it locked and just say your girlfriend has the key. anndddddddd good luck with this.

Yeah, the windows have black fabric stretched tight across the inside. I spent a couple of hours driving out to a fabric warehouse to find the perfect type; it is a VERY dark black fabric with a high thread count. Looking through the windows just looks like a room with the lights out. Even if you get your face right up in the window you can't tell that there is anything covering it.

And the garage came with steel bars on the windows and a solid wood/steel door with steel gate. The gate is locked with a big ass padlock and the door is held with a 1200 pound magnetic lock controlled by an RFID reader located on the inside of the door. I was concerned that the lock could be defeated by shutting off the power to the property so I hooked it up to a uninteruptable power supply which also feeds the wifi webcam. The cam is set up to ring my cell phone within 3 seconds of the door opening. I can then choose to either view a live feed over the net, or get back the site ASAP. Fortunately, Seattle is a compact city and so I am within 10 minutes of the location 95% of the time.

I was also concerned that my cellular alert could be defeated if the internet was cut but I noticed that if the wifi camera loses connection with the primary wifi network it automatically defaults to another one of the open wifi networks on my street. It took me awhile to figure out how to get it to call my cell. Ultimately I had to pay 10 euro for a skype account which can be controlled through the command line. I created a couple of batch files to work the whole thing. Evenytually I would like to have several camera "zones" with different cellular alerts (ringtones).

One day Id like to have a remotely operated grow that would require very minimal on-site maintanance. Possibly only once every two or three weeks. With an eye to detail and a cunning plan, the grow could be untraceable and so in the unlikely event that it where discovered it could be abandoned.

But from my research it seems that it is much more common for the grower to attract attention to himself and then reveal the grow then for the grow to be discovered first.

The lease prohibits pets although it doesn't specifically mention spider monkeys. Hey wait, WTF is a spider monkey?

If there is a smoke alarm in the garage you're screwed. If he likes to be friendly and wander around, you're screwed. I had to close my grow the other day for smoke alarm inspections, but mine are back now.

I keep a lot of grow equipment in my parents garage about 30 miles away, and don't plan on doing a significantly larger grow until I own, and no longer rent (because these inspections are bullshit.) Perhaps you just need to minimize your grow, or if you have a place outside you can store the plants there. Maybe behind bushes, or under the house, or in the attic.

Assuming you're not doing hydro... Anyways, let us know - best wishes for you!

You cant keep him out. He is doing what is required of him to keep his tenants safe. If you try to obstruct him, a call to the fire marshall or sheriff will remedy that real quick. Thats his property and he reserves the right to inspect every single square inch if he so chooses.

The best thing you can do is find a way to cover it up. If it's too large to hide with tarps or locking cabinets, you're fucked.

Silly excuses will make your landlord curious. That's how we're built. I'm glad you love to grow, but I truly believe that this is your bad. You shouldn't grow that big in rented space. If it were me, i would find a way to hide the plants, or get rid of em. I don't care much for incarceration, fines, and anal buggering- but that's just me.

If you are in the states, you may even be risking his investment in your grow. If he does get curious, and decides to come back while you're away- he will definitely snitch you out to protect his investment. Your odds are actually better if he discovers it while you are with him, as you can talk about it, and you will KNOW that he knows it's there.

No matter what happens, I wish you luck with your babies, and I truly hope everything works out for the best!
