Are carbon filter fans required…

With extraction fan? What would be the disadvantage of just running the extraction fan without it..

I realize that the smell would be strong but I don’t mind the smell and live in a state that allows growing.

Thoughts? Anyone running exhaust fa w/o carbon filter?

Mine needs replaced and I’m like do I even need this..?! lol

Copy that. I was reading that it helps create clean air for the plants also but not sure how much I buy that. I’ve always used it for smell and only smell.

gonna take it out and I guess if I change my mind I’ll get another.

As stated, carbon filter is for smell. If you are using a fan for your intake, I'd definitely put some sort of filter on it to prevent dust, hair, pests, small children, etc... getting sucked through the fan and ultimately into the tent. If you are just using the fan for exhaust, put some sort of filter over your intake vent, but there's no reason to use the carbon filter if you don't care that others may know you're growing. The law isn't the only party that the filter helps with. Thieves are also a thing to keep in mind.

Tbh 100% of carbon filters I've seen are taking care of the outlet afaik that doesn't have any bearing on the air quality, a filter on your inlets will keep things dust free though.

You don't need it unless you stay somewhere where smell is an issue tbh im just gonna warn you now when i started growing i didnt use one for a bit and honestly i could smell it a couple of streets away with some stuff it was ridiculous so beware if thats no issue then by all means

Oh they proly will like you said you and your room mates are proly a bit nose blind to it before i started drying it in tents with a filter/fan on it as well when it was that time i was reeking my neighbours houses out they dont smoke so they noticed luckily i got good neighbours who gave me a heads up instead of calling the cops as it should be there good folks so my lesson was learned

As above it's purely to lessen the smell... they represent a loss of efficiency as you're having the fan work harder to push or pull the same amount of air through a bottleneck/restriction.

And they need replacing frequently as once the carbon granules are saturated, they will stop working properly unless you can empty it and re-fill it with fresh carbon granules/pellets, and that is a messy and dusty job!
