I had a fender bender in a parking lot a few day's ago. My ins.co. said they would give me a better deal if I went to a shop preapproved by them. So I went to this place the guy looking at my car said he needed my car key to get the millage. After he had the key he got in to my cars computer and copied info from it. He didn't evey ask if he could get in my computer. If I had someone come to my home to do work and they got in to my computer it would be a crime. Is it the same thing for my car.

If you are in CA this might be a violation of the Automotive Repair Act but there's not enough information. The real problem is if you do not trust this body shop then find one you do trust and take your car there. Frankly I would never take my car to my insurance companies body shop. The shop's and insurance company share a common interest and it isn't yours.

Sorry I know this sort of thing is a pain.

Yes it is a pain. I'm in Wa. The adjuster has been a real pain I have already called the Ins. Commishner to ask about things this person has been saying. Like if we don't file a police report they won't pay for a rental car and that this was a state law the comis said that is not true. I should not have gone to this place you are right about there interest. I can and will take my car some where else. Thanks for your help.

if you're like me, cheap, then you probably have low-ball insurance with a high deductible. meaning you're probably going to pay most of that shit out of pocket anyways, meaning fuck what the insurance company says.....
