just did a noob move. i just bought a high pressure mercury balast and fitting for £15 i just found out after i baught it. is the balast usable for anything else? a ballast is just a massive resistor right? would i be able to put a MH in it or many something smaller or larger that's the same effect? or does the ballast need to be correct for the bulb? why is this? is there any way to modify the ballast for use with other bulbs?

I don't know about your ballast but I bought an electronic ballast so it would dimmable (400 or 250) and I could run an MH bulb in it. Worth the price for those features IMO.

the ballast must match the bulb this is essential to the combo of light and ballast.BTW a ballast is no a resistor but an amplification/modifier for your amps traveling through the bulb.If u have a 1oow hps ballast u must have a 1000w hps bulb to go with it,same applies for MH and all other high output bulbs/ballast.
