Bat Guano For Fertilizer

I have bat guano and it says on the box it can be mixed 2 tbs to one gallon of water and let soak for 48 hours.

Is this an effective method for delivery? Will this work ok?

I do not want to get bubblers and make teas I was hoping this would work ok.

bubbling your tea will help a lot, I always bubble mine. if you dont the powder tends to just sit at the bottom of the jug.

When I used to make tea with guano's I would take a coffee filter and place the guano and worm castings in the middle and make a little sash. I would than take string and tie it up while leaving enough string to tie it to the top of the bucket. I would then take a water pump and lay it sideways at the bottom of the bucket. This would have a whirlpool effect and I would just leave the guano sash in the bucket until I reached my desired PPM level.

you could also create a waterfall with a water pump over a bag (or screen) with the guano to create aerated tea.
makes more noise than the whirlpool thing, but gives more oxygen to the microstuff.

I knew I would get lots of input on teas, there is a ton of info on this subject out there. However I do refer to the original post, and ask how it works just steeping it because as I said I can't go buy bubblers and stuff.

Without aeration to develop new microbes, you're going to be using it solely as a fertilizer supplement. The most efficient delivery method for that purpose is application to your grow medium as a top or side dressing.

Think about it; why mix it in water (where 95% will sink to the bottom of your mixing container) and pour it on plants when normal plant watering with the product in the grow medium will accomplish the same thing?

well how much would you put on the top of your pot, and do you re-apply each watering or is one application good for the grow?

Thanks for taking the time to rap with me about this

I'm not a user of bat guano due to the environmentally destructive process to bats when harvesting it, seabird guano is far less environmentally intrusive, but I'd think they'd have instructions on the packaging for top/side dressing. If not, email them. Most fertilizers have dressing application instructions based on per square foot of coverage.

Seabird fertilizer is the most powerful organic fertilizer known to man. It has caused wars, shaped entire governments policies, fueled nations and enslaved countless souls. I am of course referring to the Peruivan "huanu" rush of the late 1800's. Mountains of huanu were mined off the Chinchas Islands in less then two decades. Talk about environmentally destructive, ever heard of the Guano Wars? I harvested/purchased ton's of bat guano, (work in home development) a couple month's ago I pulled 25lbs of bat dropping's out of one home that was under construction, and this is not uncommon for us to find on jobs.

My point is... nothing really, just wanted to share that tidbit about seabird shit, I read it in The Alchemy of Air by, Thomas Hager. :blsmoke:

I wondered what would have grown atop those giant mountains of huanu? Like a massivley giant tree that the indigenous could have lived in. bongsmilie

hey a friend of mine used only bat and seabird guano for his entire grow, and he did exactly what you are talking about. he would add the guanos to a gallon of water, put the cap back on the gallon and let them sit for a few days. of course shake it up before you actually use it to make sure everything is nice and mixed in there, but he had GREAT yields, and it was only his first grow. I personally use teas, but my yields are only slightly better than his were, and i think its mostly because i use some extra ingredients and have a little more experience. basically, if that is your only option for whatever reason, it will work very well. I would still go with this over top dressing the soil because you have much more control. you can choose more/less guano for each individual feeding and have the option to feed straight water every couple feedings. oh- dont forget to ph the solution before you feed your plants!
