i was thinking that when i flower, i would have the HPS light above the plants, and aim cfl lights at the sides of the plant. would this help the plant flower and produce more bud in the lower parts of stems.

also do hps lights produce much heat? if they do, will a fan on the plants be enough to keep em cool?

Yes a HPS will produce a good amount of heat. You will need good ventilation, perhaps a cool tube for the light itself. A fan on the plants will NOT be enough. Extra CFL's couldn't hurt it!

plant & aquarium CFLs have some red spectrum and they would help the best. and definitely get the hood with the flange for the fan. I didn't and the heat is a major pain in the ass to deal with.
