How deep does the reservior need to be?

If I can find a large, but shallow reservior, will that work?

I only have about 4' of height to work with.

it doesnt have to be deep at all you can have a good size shot container and use that ... lots of ppl have ones that are shallow because of hight issues

You've been given good advice here.
It is perfectly fine if the tank is shallow and the roots get all intertwined. You can not get "root bound" in the tank, like in soil. I've seen 6 inches dep work fine, 12 inches is better or best.

In fact it has become difficult to find totes that are larger than 10 gal but still no deeper than 12-13 inches. From what I understand, people use these to store things in, weird but true. A tote that is not so deep has its gallons distributed in length and width which is good because it gives plants more room between them. I recently found a 15 gal tote that is only 12 deep and I had been searching for one.

I'm using a 3 gallon ~7" deep tote. With the net cups in there plus 1" airspace between the water and net cup bottoms, it is about 3" deep of water. That equates to about 1.5 gallons, just FYI.

I've also seen ppl grow in like glasses or shot glasses or small pots - whatever works as long as it is not clear and there is room for the roots to flop around in the water.

at wal-mart i found a 28 quart (7 gallon) tub that is only about 6 inch tall, it was like 7 bucks... i think its good enough for me cuz i only have 34 inch height. i have to do LST cuz my 2 100 watt hps bulbs hang down 6 inch.. plus a place between plants and lights thats another 3 inch min... thats 15 out of 34 gone already thats only 19 inch of growth.. not much but can be done with extream LST..

Sweet find on the tote - yes, that will be perfect.

Look into "SCROG" - Screen of Green - it is kind of like LST but on steroids. You can set a max height (screen height) and go from there. It's a good idea if you have spacial width but not height which it sounds like you do.
