Building 2x2 Grow Room. Need advice

Oahu, Hawaii
Wood frame with plywood walls. Located on bottom floor under the stairs. Its not really a basement. Anywhere between 74-80F.
As quiet and odorless as possible. Will be used from seed to flower.

Height of box: 38.75"

Usable height: ~24"

2'x2' area

HLG 100 3000k

3 gal pot smart pot 7.5" height
Scrog/LST?

  1. Havent quite figured out ventilation yet. I could go wider on the box and put carbon filter inside or make an additional air tight box with the filter and fan.
  2. Will I have enough height?
  3. How much heat will the hlg100 generate?
  4. Wider/small pot for more height?
  5. Other light options with minimal heat output?
  6. Realistically how high could I place the hlg100 with driver while still being safe?
  7. Is this a fire hazard?
  8. Silent fan options? Acinfinity T4 is it really 28dba?
  9. Strain recommendations, auto?
  10. Just make the whole thing higher, put it in my room and hope nobody comes looking? haha
Please answer as much as you can. Thanks

  1. i would do a seperate box for the filter
  2. i honestly think you will be compromised on height unless you scrog and use a very short indica
  3. the light itself will generate a 5-10 degrees but the driver is most of that. remote mounting the driver outside the box will help with heat as long as it can be vented away from your intake otherwise it is defeating the purpose
  4. every inch will help in height but too big of a pot will grow too big of a plant for your space so be careful. i wouldnt use over 2gal.
  5. if you DIY your own light using HLG components you would be able to dim it. The HLG100 is not dimmable and 100W in that space will be too much light for (early) veg
  6. If you have a small computer fan hitting the top of the board to act as active cooling it will help dissipate the heat a lot
  7. not unless you make sloppy electrical connections or other poor choices
  8. Yes
  9. I would stick with short indicas myself.
  10. Yes. Build it bigger and give yourself more space. Fwiw I found a really nice free wardrobe closet on CL that is 38"x26"x60" that I am using as a veg cabinet. Sits in my living room and unless I open it you would have no idea its full of ganja.

Okay you convinced me lol. I'll try and make something nice for my room.

This would be nice but looks heavy and no truck
@808allday I was patient and found one in the free section after looking for a few weeks. I don't have a truck either but I found someone on CL to deliver it for a reasonable price. Or search for Ikea Expedit or Ikea Wardrobe and you can probably find one that is disassembled that you don't need a truck for.

One other thing to note, the HLG100 would be a little underpowered for flower. You want to be closer to 30 w/sf.

As for a DIY light I would suggest either getting

Or you could save a bit and have easier dimming if you bought the board, the B version of the driver, and other stuff separately.

If you are going to spend $75 on something, just get something like this, or similar.
I think he wanted something that would be stealthier if it was going to be in his bedroom.

Actually @808allday isn't Hawaii a legal medical state? A tent would definitely be a lot simpler.

The tent and a couple boards would still be a better option if he needs the boards to hide it

Reflective, should be no light leaks on a new tent, places to hang things, easy tear down if needed, waterproof lining, so many benefits to a tent over building a box of wood

Yes Hawaii is legal for medical. I don't have a medical card. Not as concerned about the cops, more about the other occupants who wouldn't like it.

@Powertech
I would like to use a tent. But it seems a bit obvious. I think some stealth would go a long way with unwanted questions that a tent would bring.

You are trying to hide it from other building tenants? Or your own family/roommates? It's going to be pretty difficult to conceal that you have plants growing in the basement or your bedroom from other people living in your place. Just the daily maintenance and watering etc is going to give it away, let alone you will need some heavy duty carbon filter going. Ideally you want to be exhausting the cabinet/tent outside of the room that it is in, usually via a window. That is usually tough to conceal from other people inside the house. Just being 100 with you before you spend any $ and regret it.

Even Helen Keller could figure it out

House is 3 floors. I'm on the bottom (bedroom and living area). Grandparents on the middle (ground floor). They aren't the type to snoop.

I think I'll just practice my woodworking skills and make an actual useable cabinet 2x2x4. But still keeping the grow in mind (light proof etc). In the mean time just buy and wait for other equipment. Amazon getting really picky on shipping with most of the domestic flights shut down

Cool sounds like a plan. If you have the extra height available I would try for at least 4.5' or 5' tall if you can do it. Will give you a little more flexibility in light hanging height and in case you have a plant that gets out of hand.

Thanks for the advice.
Back to the drawing board. I'll keep the 5' in mind.
With the extra height I'll try to fit ventilation inside.
Would you say ventilation (blower, filter, ducting) takes up about 12" away from total height?

That should be ok but i am not sure to be honest. I prefer mounting my exhaust outside the tent/cabinet to save space, I never tried it inside.

if you would want to go with hydro you could use a small 1 gallon pots with drippers and a small pump on a timer to automatically fertigate your plants, that would save you some height
