Clipping Fan Leaves prior to Harvest

I have a buddy who trims his fan leaves a week before harvest. He does it to make trimming easier for him.

My question is it harmful or helpful to the buds/plant to do that even with only a week left to harvest?

Then he might as well harvest it a week early too because he is taking away the plants ability to take in light and convert it into making buds grow. Before I chop the plant on harvest day I will pull all the fan leaves off by hand, I find it makes it easier to trim.

I clip them.. if they are yellow and falling off. I keep the fan leaves that are still attached on when drying.. it covers the buds and starts the cure on them before they hit the jars. slow dries them even slower.

If a leaf is more than half dead I will pull it off, otherwise I leave them on, even yellowing leaves still draw energy for the plant. I have always trimmed prior to drying, I wish long ago I would have tried drying first as it would have saved me drying buds too quick. My drying room is dialed in enough where this is not necessary for me, but it is definately a good idea for slowing down the drying process for better/smoother smoke.

yeah last time i trimmed/dried/cured it worked okay... but yeah this time i dried/trimmed/cured... they are in the paper bag now.. but i'll tell you once i started taking them down to manicure... holy crap.. yeah it smelled like it cured already... i can't imagine what it will do in the jar,

I do the same thing but I do it a day before I harvest just to help me with trim time the next day. A full week is to early to cut them IMO.

Not necessarily. The buds still have leaves on them that can process light and the trichomes continue to mature under the light. The OP said "fan leaves". Might lose some potential growth or yield but would be very little. Plants have already done most of their growing by then anyway. But the guy it taking away energy that the plant would be using during the flushing process IMO.

To each their own...if he feels the pro's out weigh the con's then thats on him. He may do it a week before to allow the wounds to heal so moisture does not leak out of the cuts and create a faster dry. (im just trying to be in dudes mind, lol) Its not the best method imo but I wouldnt go as far as saying he might as well be harvesting a week before thats a little exaggeration.

I wouldnt recommend it because I like to do what zubey91 does. I have been preaching this method over and over. The dry is even slower and more even if you chop the plant at the base or pull it as a whole w/ the roots. I really need to do a write up on this method.

Right. He does it just to make his trimming easier, i was just wondering if there was a negative or positive effect on the buds.

and Please do make a write up, im trying to figure a way to slow dry in warm enviroment.

ok.

question about the paper bag thing.....

You dry them in the paper bag and dont hang them up, right?

no i hang them for like 3-4 days.. then trim them and then put them in a paper bag.. it slows the drying process more then if it was hanging. I keep them in there for 1 or 2 days.. then place in jars..

I live in a desert climate so its so dry.. if i was back east i'd prob dry for 4-5 days
