Clonning in water, strange results

Why some root and other don't ?

I made 6 cuttings 15 days ago from a clone and put them in water. After 2-4 days I added an air pump to aereate the water and I aslo cover them with a 5L plastic bottle for the humidity and mist them every day and even twice a day.

This clones today, after 15 days haven't shown any roots or signs of roots and the tips of the leaves are starting to yellow. Also the stems grew a couple days ago some kind of white scab (definitely not roots) as if it was healing itself.

On the other hand, I had two small plants that were starting to flower and I put back in 18/6 light. I decided to cut the tips (20cm - almost half of the plant) and I put them in the kitchen in a glass of water with some other random plants (as you wold put a flower or whatever). Didn't cover, didn't spray, didn't anything and they were flowering!! and after 9 days both started rooting.

I must be missing something here and doing something wrong but can't figure it out. Can anybody tell why my clones don't root and those two tips I didn't care about did ?

Your loving your clones to death. Clones rarely need the care we give them, try plain water and a smaller stone with no misting or humidity dome.

Keep them in ambient lighting and roots in 1 - 2 weeks. I made an aerocloner for about $35 and get roots in 4 days and transplant for vegging in 7 days.

Well, i read about cloning and everybody suggest a dome and misting the clones. I mean, don't you use a dome or mist your clones ?

I don't mist, but use a dome, and rockwool starter's

also some strains are easier to root then others

still no roots in the "real" clones, I'll get some pics in a minute

the small whites "scabs," are root buds. be patient.

i just let them sit in my veg room, some just fuck up, or drink all the water and die when i'm not paying attention. When water cloning, i feel like taking a few extras is necessary, lazy cloning at its finest.

this is the answer.. some strains clone super easily, and other's can be a real bitch to get to root.. i've had some root in about 4 days, and i have had others go over 3 weeks before i tossed them in the shitter, same tech on all of them...

So this are the "real" clones after 16 days, the tip of the leaves are starting to yellow and die and there are no roots, just that white weird stuff they grew.



And this is one of the tops I cut and put in a glass of water in the kitchen after 12 days, as you can see it's huge with big leaves (didn't cut any), didn't even scalp it either and it was flowering...



I think that maybe it has something to do with choosing better branches to cut ? Or maybe wait untill the branches are longer or something. But for instance I read the water cloning test in overgrow and the small and medium size clones grow faster roots than the big one.

Also, do you think that maybe because I mist them a lot they didn't need that much water and that's why they didn't grow roots ?

In my experience fat cuttings do better than skimpy ones. Better reserves. The top ones are rooting btw.

The top ones aren't rooting, they had those white things for days but they are not roots, at least not normal roots. I'll try to cut thicker clones next time

Also, do you cut the branch close to the stem or get the clone after one or two nodes ? Do you think it matters ?

Yes, just put them im water and they are meant to root in 10-14 days. What I found is that tomatoes root way better that mj with this technique. They root faster and also with more and bigger roots.

I read about suggestions that you should cover for humidity, change the water every 5 days or so and even mist, but I didn't do any of that with the big ones and they still root as you can see. So I wonder what's really necessary and in which cases. Maybe time will tell

Your clones might have been too moist the first time from your bottle dome and consistent misting? I agree with ru4r34I, clones do not need much attention to root as long as the temperature and humidity are right. Happy baby making!

Got to agree that some strains are just harder to clone.
Also, if the clones were on a high nitrogen regimen (veg mix) they can be stubborn to root. A cutting taken from early flower can sometimes root faster.
