Hello Mr. Chiln -

Can you exhaust your closet? Will heat be an issue?

If you can exhaust your closet and draw the heat out of the room/closet, you should most definitley go with the 400.

cheers

One Plant? use 250W. No need to go that big for one plant. You'll have a shitload of lumens with one 250WHPS

While I agree that a 250 would grow one plant just fine, there are some other things to consider. For example, a 430 HPS will grow larger, fatter buds. And then, there is the possibility of expanding the grow as many of us have done. You know how it is ... you start out with a 50cc dirt bike and by the time you've progressed to a 500cc monster, you've spent a load of money moving up the ladder. So ... with that in mind, I'd suggest the largest light you can use without having a heat issue.

there was a small heat problem (about 84 degrees) but i upgraded my inductor from a 250cfm to a 500 cfm fan and place a Y splitter with one hose exhaust the hood itself. i love the hydrofarm hood

I think you should clarify that a bit mogie

Shouldnt you mean to say that the more lumens the more yield

I only say this because CFLs are low wattage but high lumens

Lumens being the main factor in lighting

Teknique the original post was asking about either a 250 or 400 watt bulb. My answer was in response to that. So no I don't need to clarify.

  1. There are two things to consider when deciding what size lighting system to use: the actual area in which the plants will be taking up, and how tall you want your plants to grow. 150-175 watt lights are primarily used for seedlings or cuttings, though they can be used for growing plants to maturity if the plants are kept short. 250 watt systems are good for areas up to 2.5' square at the most, as long as the plants don't get taller than about 2'. 400 watt systems cover a primary area of about 3' x 3', or up to 4' x 4' max. 600 watt systems cover a primary area of about 4' x 4', or up to 5' x 5' max. 1000 watt systems cover from 4' x 6' up to 5' x 7'.
  2. The taller you plan to grow your plants, the higher the wattage needed. This is because the light intensity diminishes by 50% for every foot you move away from the bulb. So, if your plants reach 4' tall, then the leaves at the bottom of the plant are receiving only around 12% of the light that the top of the plant is getting!

Hope this is a help!

you need a fan.
you have a little less than 44 cuft. of space to vent. some folks have used a fan out of an old computer to ventilate that small of a space. Of course you will also need an intake for fresh air into the grow area as well.
