The answer to that is however far away from your plants your trashcan is.

Buy some HID lighting. You will be glad you did.

2' tubes are not "compact florescent"...they are tubes...2' tubes come in a range of wattages...and it should be written on the tube as to the model number which usually includes the wattage, or the wattage seperately. If you want to grow in a small area use CFL's instead of the tubes...and get at least 23-26watt CFL's...and as many as you can get. if you are hell bent on 2' tubes of unknown wattage...the question is can you grab the bulb without it feeling too hot?..if you can grab right ahold of it and forever sit there holding it, you can get your plants right up next to it..if its a little warm keep it about 1" away, if its uncomfortable to touch it for more than 5 seconds then go for about 2".

im growin in a small area so HID would be to much of a problem
If you now use 2' tubes wouldn't this fit?

about 2". Don't listen to the HPS ass clowns who worship the HPS. They think there is only one way to skin a cat. With HPS you are stuck with a narrow spectrum light, other ways to produce better quality stuff man, the way nature does it. Of that is all you have is 2 fluorescent tubes you are way under lit. You nedd actual 150 watt per plant and I recommend 3 or 4 32 watt cfl's or higher...

I have had great resualts with CFL's about 4 -5 " away from the leaves. I use all of the spectrums 2700k , 5000k, 6500K, ...You will need plenty of cfl's tho. I veg my plants for 2 months under 40 cfl's and they work pretty dam good, they stay cooler than hid

If I happen to be the "ass clown" of which you speak I said HID lighting, not just HPS lighting. There is a difference that evidently those who use home lighting type bulbs to grow with are unfamiliar with.

When dealing with any type of fluorescent lighting you need more wattage to receive an equal amount of usable light.

Check out how much wattage in different types of fluorescent lighting it takes to equal one 400-watt HPS.

Light Output Comparison Chart
Each scenario above represents approximately 50,000 lumens.

Also, HID lighting produces more grams per watts used than fluorescent lighting.

Funny how many of the HPS people think it is the holy grail... It is a mono spectrum light, you need more than that, Fluoro is the way.
Look at how many real watts all your lights are using...then harvest your crop when ready...once you actually get a grow finished you'll realize how shitty cfl's are vs HID...you are basically trashing every real indoor grower by making the statement that florescents are the way...HID is the way, and will be the way until LED matures to the point of providing proven results beyond what 1000watt HPS lights can do.

btw...you are using a fucking halogen in your grow...at least you said you were...good luck with that...

Ignorance, sheer ignorance.
Hey, I have a million candlepower boat spotlight here...think it will work?. All kidding aside, I have heard that the high wattage(200)CFL's may not be any more effective than the standards. Not sure about that one b/c I don't use them.

Did I miss a post?
It hasn't been determined just what light he's using.
Has anybody considered that he might have T-5's?
Nothing wrong with them. I wouldn't go throwing them in the trash can.

Suggesting to someone that they trash their lights before knowing what is being used is ludicrous.

its ok ...cfl....t5 ..led users get use to Hid users and there views and the way they express them....... its the internet and in this day and age even idiots have pc's

i have digital ballast, Hps lamp and hood, fans.... but i'm using CFL's for my cabinet and i'm quite liking them so far.

and i'm sorry to all you "real indoor growers" who think my opinon don't count because its different from yours..... wouldn't it be a sad world if we builied people over there choices and opinions, such as there religoin, race, colour creed and sexuality.............. oh sorry YOU already do

While he did say 2' lights, and that's all, just for example, if he was using 4' T5's he would need 10 of them and burn 540 watts to get an equal amount of light as one single 400-watt HPS ... and he would still lack the penetration of the 400-watt HPS.

And to think that it only took 39 years and about 8 or 9 months of growing to get as ignorant as I am when it comes to what works best.
Please leave the ego outside the door.

I'll say it again.
