Democrats vote to nominate Nancy Pelosi for House speaker

Washington (CNN)House Democrats overwhelmingly picked Nancy Pelosi to be their nominee for House speaker on Wednesday, though she'll need to win over more than a dozen no votes in order to win with 218 members' support in the full floor vote in January.

Pelosi was nominated as speaker by House Democrats in a closed door meeting by a 203-32 vote, according to attendees in the room. Three ballots were blank. One member was absent.


To be elected House speaker requires support from a majority of all members who are present and voting, a threshold that could be as high as 218 votes, though Pelosi could win with fewer as several previous House speakers have done, if members vote present or decline to participate.


A small, but vocal, faction of Democrats have been attempting to derail Pelosi's run for speaker, but she has succeeded in winning over a number of critics in recent days and was expected to easily win the nomination since it required only a majority of House Democrats. The make-or-break moment for Pelosi isn't expected to come until January, when the full House holds a final floor vote to elect the speaker.

All we heard was how her time was short. All the new members would push her aside like yesterday's news. Now no one will stand up to run against her. It's Ironic she scares the GOP so badly for her liberal leanings, yet the liberals say she isn't liberal enough.

Neither side wants her in there but with Hillary gone they have to keep the next biggest fund raiser.

All primates reserve the right to kill their offspring. Even the highland gorilla, the best mother of all the higher primates, will kill her baby if her own life is in danger.

Passing laws will not change this truth.

Hillary was in the Senate, not the house. Nancy does raise lots of money. For both sides.

But the leadership positions are like the Captains of a football team. Your teammates decide who is best to get them where they want to go.

We voted for representatives in the House and they vote for the person to be speaker that they think will help them represent us.
