Lowe’s Jungle Growth Organic Potting (19-03-03) - First Mistake
PH treated tap water
18/6 (40-50% @ 14”)
VPD - 0.7-0.9 (total grow so far)
Soil PH (top 3”) ~5.8

hi guys. i’ve done everything i could and read everything i could find before registering here.

first time grower, and ran head first into high nitrogen levels. 2 flushes so far with treated tap water. no significant feeding (small amounts in with each flush)

here’s the present situation. i believed, at first, it must be the high N, but after 2 flushes and 2 crappy meters, i’m wondering if it’s not a calcium issue.

i’m a complete novice so, i don’t even want to try, but, i’d welcome any insight or to learn if anyone sees this routinely

thanks - karl

i may have spaced pointing out the discoloration (splotches) on new growth, had slight clawing yesterday and watered today with epsom and 25% diluted FF big bloom and grow big. you can see the yellowed tips on one of the more recent, and the first single leaves after the cotyldons. the second older set also have some vague browning

I don't see signs of N tox.. Miscolored leaves are a watering issue.. Can't really flush organic soil, the more water you add the more nutes get released.. I would just sit back and watch.. Be patient..
Plant that size don't really get deficent..

Be careful, you don't want to love them to death!!

Yes, looks like overwatering, plants in pots of that size can go for many days without watering. I don't see any clawing, and the leaves are way too light in color to have an excess N issue. By overwatering you're drowning the roots, they get damaged and cant take up the necessary nutrients and start cannabilizing the lower leaves. Let em dry out, water when the pot gets light (in weight).

thanks again guys. i have 2 small desktop fans blowing at the bottom of the pot. i am watering every 3 days and use a soil meter. i’ll let it show a little more to the dry side than i have been. also, when i do water, water until some runoff (takes over a quart to produce any), should i reduce the volume i’m using as well?

If the meter is one of the 3 in 1 kind don't trust the ph reading. I've heard the moisture part is ok. I wouldn't know. I sent mine back as soon as I opened and tested it.

it is. 2 of them from 2 different sources too. both read 8 when switched over from moisture. i bought a new digital (4-in-1 with soil temp) and it’s reading significantly lower (5.8 - 6.0) so, i might have washed the soil too much with the flushes.

In organic soil it's usually not necessary to check or adjust soil ph. I agree with these guys about easing up on watering. What are you gonna feed them when the soil runs out of nutrients?

i have the foxfarm trio but, it might be week 5 before it really needs it. i have a gallon jug of ph’d tap water with a 25% added combo of the grow big and big bloom. other than that, epsom today in the watering (1 tbs./gal)

That soil should have plenty nutrients for now. It doesn't look like bad soil. If you're gonna use that FF Trio don't follow they're feeding chart. Go easy with it. I don't think you need the Epsom either. You're gonna love her to death like Dan was saying. Just leave her alone for a couple days.

I don't use PH up and down but I do remember hearing adding it to use at a later date isn't a good idea. Maybe I misunderstood that.

my initial flush was tap water and ph down. the next one i used organic unfiltered vinegar. after doing a small soil survey with the better meter, i can now see that i’ve over worked the PH. my soil rated out of the bag hot (0.19-0.03-0.03) and the countermeasures have done their job but, i needed to leave them alone. my initial flushes probably were enough, but i persisted figuring nitro toxicity. after the survey, the average ph of the soil (at about 3.0 depth) is around 5.7.

Like Johnny15 said, ditch the "Soil Moisture Meters" they're notoriously inaccurate in measuring both PH and moisture. When the pot get's light, it's time to water. For all the things you did, they came through pretty good, but sit back, relax, and let them grow. Don't chase soil PH, it will drive you crazy, and accomplish little other than screwiing up your grow, almost all commercial soils are buffered, the PH will slowly rise as the water infiltrates the soil. PH the water/nutes going in, that is sufficient. The plants will grab the nutrients in the more acidic range immediately, as the soil buffers the nutrient solution, the nutrients in the nuetral/basic range become available. Best of luck!

hey guys. through the time since i’ve last posted, my apartment air conditioning went out until they replace the exterior unit. needless to say, challenges from that have kept this grow on its toes.

Here’s a pictorial update since the implementing of the wet-dry cycle. Things seem to be back on track, albeit it appears i might have suffered stunted growth in week 2 and part of 3.

just watered it since the initial post on monday (4 day dry out) with 3 cups ph’d water and 1 cup of ph’d nutrients at 25% strength. Again, notwithstanding its only the start of week 5, i’m hoping for some corrective growth (appears to be densifying) and we’ll see about cola heights in 2 weeks.
