DIY Ultrasonic Fogger Cloner

1 Sterlite plastic tub (any size)
1 Ultrasonic fogger
1 Roll reflective tape (or any light proof tape)
14 2" Neoprene disks
2 12V PC Fans

I was interested in building a aero cloner or like a dwc / bubbleponics sorta deal but that would have required buying pumps and tubing, air pumps etc... Not only is my space limited so a big tub cloner probably wouldn't have worked out so well in my grow area. i wanted something I could put together with things I had laying around that was also small. So most of these material i had at home so it kept the cost to a minimum. I was really surprised to find I had an ultrasonic fogger that was embedded inside some cheesy halloween toy but what I didn't have was a power supply to run it. Thats was the only thing that was purchased so I headed down to good ol' fashioned Radio Hut and i was able to get a replacement. you can find ultrasonic foggers online for about 25 dollars and this particular tub i believe i got at walgreens for like 2 dollars.

First I started with the tub the one I have was clear so using some reflective tape I had laying around I light proofed it by covering it with some layers of tape. The tape is weathproof so it won't come off if its wet plus its reflective :eyesmoke:

Once done with the tub next is the lid one thing that helped me a great deal was using a reference object. something a little bit smaller than the neoprene which explains the excedrine bottle.

After tracing out several circles for the disks and a tiny hole of the cords i began to cut each with a box cutter i started by cutting an X into the circle

then I traced over the edges and simply bent the piece back until it snapped off very little cutting is necessary

As you can see I have 14 circles I intentionally didn't cut 15 to give the fogger a place to sit.

Here are a few shots with the fogger on whn its on its like a small pump and actually pushes water kinda like a fountain

There are also 4 that are uncut since I was using what I have on hand which was 10 disk I do plan on going to the old local hydro shop to get 4 more disks then the lid will also be covered in reflective tape

There are no visible leak with the fogger on but to help keep the fog sealed in I may apply weather stripping but we shall see before building this I had been reading that foggers will increase water temperatures.

I have yet to experience this so to be on the safe side I connected 2 pc fans and put them under neath the reservoir blowing air directly on the reservoir right now the fans run with the timer on the fogger on 30 minutes off 30 every day but I am considering designing a temperature sensor that will turn on the fans should the water temp get too high

So if you didnt have this stuff laying around like I did you can find it with a search on the good ol interweb for the lazy just see below. The fogger would set you back about 25 dollars iff you buy it online you can probably also find them in your local pet sotre. A roll of reflective tape can be bought at any hardware store for about 8 bucks. If you have a bin that isnt see thru like mine then you can disregard the tape. The neoprene can be purchased at any hydro shop or online.

Nice bro. I like the diy stuff. I'm thinking about doing something with a fogger... I had no idea things were this easy.

One thing... even without clear tubs reflective tape is always a good idea. Most plastic lets a slight glow of light through so cutting that out is good. Also if the plastic is dark it will absorb heat, so the reflectiveness of the tape would help that. Plus it adds an extra layer of insulation. I put metal tape on pretty much everything but the plants, haha.

Thanks for the nice little tutorial... much appreciated.

I know you are saying, but captain what does this have to do with fog cloning.
well, mates this is why

so if your are savvy or riddled with scurvy like the captain you go print out the coupon get your self one of those. Mine ran me 17 with tax and what not. i put a link to a png file with 6 coupons so I guess you could have an army of foggers

Just my experience... I tried the very same thing for a DIY cloner and the water temps were my biggest problems.... Possibly a larger container would work but mine was similar sized to yours and I could not get a good balance between fog and temp. I set the timer for 10 on and 15 off and not enough fog would remain in the chamber so the roots would rot out. Setting the timer on for a longer period would raise the temps to just under 80. I gave up on the DIY and just bought the 2" Clone lid for the 66 Rainforest. So now I do all my vegging in the Rainforest... New seedlings and clones... Like I said, a bigger reservoir would possibly work and I actually used a 2" hole drill bit. Made the hole cutting alot easier and safer from my box cutter attempts. Also, I was using the nutramist foggers which claim they dont produce any heat but that wasnt the case obviously.

Good Luck with it. Im sure the idea can work just needs a little tweaking.

I've read that non-teflon coated foggers will eventually stop functioning due to nutrient buildup. Seems like the coolest design is to have the fogger outside of the res, with a fan blowing in the mist. That's how nutramist did it anyway.

Hey sorry i havent had much time to update I've been playing this job market trying to find gainful employment but the fogger works the only trouble i had was similar to actingbusy the water temp because the container was so small it keep alot of heat so i tried different things likea 6 inch fan blowing air underneath, then i tried pc fans underneath, i even tried using a piece of granite which worked better than the fans but the temps where still a bit to high for my liking so i got another container that was a little larger still trying to keep to the small and cheap factor i previously had now it works perfectly. I use it without nutes just plain distilled water so the disk doesnt get to much build up on it. I primarily use this for clonning and from what ive heard plants dont really take up nutes well through fog if i added like a airstone or bubble wand maybe i would use it with nutes but then it wouldnt be a fogger clonner. Right nowI am in the process of making a diy waterfarm kit which is like 80 percent done i havent had a chance to take any photos though

Drop them in a vinegar solution every so often and the nutrient scale goes away.

Now I have something to do with the two I've been carrying around in moving boxes for years :)

I always thought they'd come in handy for something.
