the lumens matter greatly! certain amounts of lumens are needed depending on the amount of plants you are growing and how large your grow area is! and as far as getting the right bulbs go you got it right on the money!! tell me how large you growspace is and how many plants you are trying to grow and i'll tell you how many bulbs for each the veg room and the flower room you will need! i currently grow with cfl's and i'm loving its progress so far!

im doin fairly well with about 1 100w equiv cfl per plant in veg mode. 8 plants and 9 bulbs lined up Im sure i could prolly push more light but have space constraints.
thing to remember about cfl's is they give off more light from the sides than the bottom

check my sig for ideas

ya deff atleast 2 per plant...i have 4 on 1 plant because its gotten pretty big...just pay attention to how the light actually hits the plant and try to make sure that the light covers the complete area of it...cus now i have a plant that the leaves are pretty big and those leaves block the light trying to get to other parts of the plant. i have 12 cfls for 6 plants. but they are all close together so basically they all have about 4 bulbs close 2 them.
