Do you "taste" your flower during the drying/curing process?

I was doing a bit of trimming on some of the larf at 6 weeks in, and I clipped a few budlets that smelled really lovely!....kinda fake-grape candy-ish. I'm usually disappointed whenever I try to smoke any of it, though.....that "early" green component is just too yucky tasting....even though it smells great!

Nothing wrong with sampling. It’s funny bcuz some plants are perfectly ready to smoke as soon as they’re adequately dry, while others need a couple months in the jar to really shine and tell their whole story. And everything in between.
Aye that’s something I’ve noticed as well! Seems like some terpenes get lost in time but others shine through. One strain I’ve found that likes a good cure is zkittlez

A cut I ran for a while (and very sadly lost) first time sampling, thought it was good/decent, terps were strong, but the effect was nothing special.

Came back to those jars two months later and was blown away by the effect. Some grail type stuff for me personally.

Anyway sure enough on subsequent grows it was the same thing. That one really needed those 2 months. Probably the most dramatic case of needing a cure I’ve come across.

Yeah it comes down to what terps are present and dominant or working in conjunction with each other then you got flavonoids thiols fatty acids etc I think you will find the ones that appreciate a good cure might be higher in sesquiterpes and the stuff that's better enjoyed earlier will be higher in mono terpenes.

Terpenes/esters/thiols/flavonoids/etc. profiles change throughout the entire growth. Even in veg, many plant leaves can smell skunky, for example. As flowering begins, there are several distinctive phases to the terpene development. When the buds are just forming the first, small "snowballs", they often smell like cauliflower (to me)....and then they start to develop a more perfume-y/floral phase I think it often smells like old-school Coppertone suntan lotion....and then, eventually, they each start to settle in on their signature or "ripe" smells that can vary all over the place. When they get chopped and start to dry, the chlorophyl that's left starts to degrade and the plants can smell slightly grassy or hay-like for a bit. Assuming the plants are of good genetics and have been well-grown, it's only after proper drying that you start to get the really complex smells....and they come out as soon as you start to trim the dried buds. And then you're going to need to store some of it, so it needs to be "cured" for the long term storage....after which, you will get different terpenes. I've had some ho-hum buds become really nice after a year of storage. I've also had others that start out delicious and then degrade to the point of smelling like an old, steam-heated house from the 1800's! ;)

You doing as you should, sampling as you go. What dry method did you use and how are you currently curing?

I have my flower in a drying net hanging in my tent. All was good at 63 degrees/63 rh for the first few days. then this genius had to peep at his harvest (again) left my lights on at full blast in a mostly empty tent for a few HOURS. it was almost 90/40 rh. Unfortunately my slow dry has become a HYPER FAST DRY.

I plan on curing in generic grove bags. I am trying to keep it KISS and budget friendly for this run.

(I am just high and rambling after this point. read at your own peril).
While my GF had no issues with me spending a bonus I earned so selfishly on this project, I wanted to prove to myself (and maybe the ex-wife a little) that I could at the very least grow the mid tear stuff I get in the medical market (OK) at an approximate cost.
By the grace of god, in the rare instance that I had money in my pocket that was not sucked up into the void of dire need, an opportunity arose! Thanks to the glorious utopia created by Zuckerberg and his marketplace, I met a wonderful methamphetamine enthusiast who had an older model SF4K for 150 bucks, well below the price I was willing to pay for a much weaker light source. I was able to puth that money into upping everything else. I could buy equipment from companies who at the very least, had marketing in English. As well, my seeds came from not from nature (bag seed), but from Maine.

(Pope is thirsty, he drinks the little remaining melted ice in the grotesque display of holiday cheer meets fried chicken restaurant, and worries he needs to get up for a beverage. This cannot be. He eyes the joint of Pineapple Express sitting in his ashtray to jumpstart the edible starting its boosters. No. Must. End. Rambling. Post.)

My next run I am just going to modify a few little things and let her rip again.

I could talk for hours how gardening (in general, this all started last spring when I started with tomatoes) has taught me to not over complicate things when trying to become proficient in a new thing, and it allows me to give myself grace when I fuck up. It also teaches patience and observation over a scale that we don't get a lot in our modern lives. It's a wonderful reminder that we live outside of the scales, like ones paycheck, the duration of most entertainment we enjoy. Time gains weight in the way Terry Pratchett describes it in Discworld.

Sorry, I could ramble on for ages when I get the right cannabinoids in me. As is known by stoner lore and practice.
In keeping with my faith, as leader of The Church of the Sacred Capybara, I must commit an act of Hydration, followed by the sacred act of inhalation.

As always, be kind to yourself and others. Give and take kindness freely.

Thanks, I never came across that in my cannajourney, I will have to make sure the algorithm knows to feed that kinda stuff to me! Gracias!
