LANSING -- The nation's top anti-drug official is in Lansing to campaign against a Michigan ballot proposal that would legalize the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

John Walters is the director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. He has scheduled media events in Lansing on Tuesday and a news conference on Wednesday in the Detroit suburb of Southfield.

Walters opposes Proposal 1, which will appear on ballots next month. If passed, the measure would let severely ill patients use marijuana to relieve pain, nausea and other symptoms.

Similar measures have been enacted in a dozen states.

Backers say the initiative will relieve suffering. Opponents say it will hinder anti-drug efforts.
