Drying

I just finished harvesting my crop the last 3 days. Now that they are dry, the beautiful smell is gone. I have sour Diesel, but It barely smells. I'm kinda stressed that I may have done something wrong as far as drying, or does it just take a few weeks to cure. It's in jars and seems really, really dry

Please help. i got a huge harvest, so I cant fuck it up now.

Dry room temps are 75 degree and humidity is 36-39%. Im drying them for 4 days. is it normal for the smell to fade during drying, and before cure?

Arizona weather is sooo dry

I am concerned with your drying temps/humidity. When you harvested, did you trim or hang whole plant to dry? You really need to stay between 65 - 75 degrees (which you were on the high side) and 45% - 55% humidity. If you can put a hydrometer in the jar with the buds, you will know if you need to put some moisture back in during the curing process. You may be to dry. The best drying room is one that has good negative pressure and climate control. I have a heater and 2 humidifiers in my tent to keep climate correct for drying and since I hang whole, part of the curing process starts there as well. You want to try and get them in the jars as close to 65% humidity without going over. Then you want to get them slowly down to 55% in the jars and ready for long term storage. You can use one hydrometer and put it close to the other jars given you have opened them up for equal amounts of time. Good luck, drying/curing is one of the most essential stages in cannabis cultivation! bongsmilie

I hate to be a downer, but I don't see how a cannabis plant could possibly dry that fast in proper conditions. So many guides online will simply tell you to hang the plants in a cool dark place but that's much to vague. They don't mention how the drying conditions should ALWAYS be 45-55 humidity with 65-75 temps. If you just throw the buds in your closet or in a box that's going to likely make them dry too fast. I'm not sure where you live, but out here in SoCal it's near impossible to just throw plants in a room and dry them. I had this problem for like 3 harvests and wondered why this was happening because I did everything the guides I read told me to do, except for account for MY regions humidity and temperature. I had to buy insulation foam boards and make a box out of that and connect my AC to it and throw a humidifier in there. If you live where it's too cold and humid, you'll need to dry in a nice insulated room with a dehumifier and a heater to make sure your temps and humidity are at the levels they need to be. If it's too hot and dry out, you'll need an insulated room with an AC and a humidifier. Either way you'll need an insulated room where you can keep the temps and humidity at the levels they need to be, constantly.

The reason you got your hay smell is because the plants likely dried out too quickly and if that's in fact the case there really isn't much you can do to get rid of that hay smell. Again, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but at least now you know and for the next time you can invest in a good drying room set up and be blown away with your next crop. Best of luck to you man!

Thanks for the input. Cold hard truth is what I'm looking for even if its not great mood. So I checked My Sour Diesel (which has been hanging in my closet since the 1oth in a.m. Not jarred yet. Its crispy on outside and when I broke it up, the smell really came out. Smelled Sour Diesel-ish but different. Anyway, i smoked a joint and it got me stoned. When I open the jars, the buds are soft and moist again. How often and how long do I open the jars for each time. There are soooo many different directions for this.

It suck cuz I'm growing 3 strains I've never smelled before. My SUPER SILVER HAZE is so sticky and rank

Peace out

Thank you everyone who is trying to help us newbs become studs like you

I harvested the same day as you. I also live where it's dry and temps are a constant 70 degrees. Mr2Shims is correct.

You just have to jar faster than growers that live in more humid areas. I had mine in jars in 3 days. My hyrdrometers measured 69% on the 4th day. Today is the 6th day and I have readings of 64% at 71 degrees.

I burp on a 12 hour cycle for 2 hours. I set a calendar reminder on my phone to pull caps and another to pop them back on. Everytime you burp the jars it will take longer for the humidity to creep up until it stabilizes.

Here is the chart I follow.

+70% RH - too wet, needs to sit outside the jar to dry for 12-24 hours, depending.

65-70% RH - the product is almost in the cure zone, if you will. It can be slowly brought to optimum RH by opening the lid for 2-4 hours.

60-65% RH - the stems snap, the product feels a bit sticky, and it is curing.

55-60% RH - at this point it can be stored for an extended period (3 months or more) without worrying about mold. The product will continue to cure.

Below 55% RH - the RH is too low for the curing process to take place. The product starts to feel brittle. Once you've hit this point, nothing will make it better.

I wouldn't start worrying about smell until you have the jar humidity stabilized around 60%. That will be the end product, everything before this point doesn't matter unless you over dry them, then your're screwed.

And if you don't have any, get yourself some of these.

Go to the store and buy yourself some nice mason jars. Trim the buds (if you haven't already) and throw them in the jars and store them in a nice cool place, a drawer or something works just fine. After a while you'll notice moisture in the jars in the form of condensation, once you see that take all of the buds out of your jar for a little bit, 15 minutes or so maybe? Depends on the size of your buds and other factors, but you want to set them somewhere they can get fresh air. Then, after about 15 minutes or so they shouldn't be as soft and moist so you put them back in the jar and repeat the process once you notice the buds are moist again. After a while you just keep them in jars and only open them up to smoke, but for the first few days you're gonna want to check up on them and make sure they don't get too moist in there but make sure you don't forget about them and let them dry out too much. You don't need to be checking like every 5 minutes but every couple hours wouldn't hurt. I'd throw them in a jar asap though.

My apologies if this advice seems a bit vague, it's kind of a combination of trial and error and knowing your particular climate and reacting to it. Just keep them in jars and watch over them and you'll be fine. Last year something similar happened to me, smelled a bit like hay and in the end some of my plants didn't have a smell. Didn't smell like hay or what they were, but when you'd grind it up and smoke it in a joint or a blunt it smelled nice and was tasty as hell! It was hardly something for commercial purposes, but fortunately as a medical patient I just supply my own needs. If you're just looking for something to smoke and not sell I'm sure you'll be quite happy with your product. Just keep thinking about what you could have done better the next time around and apply it to your next grow. Practice makes perfect my friend.

The odor of decaying chlorophyll is overpowering. Curing speeds up the decomposition of chlorophyll.

I'm so used to the smell of this particular strain that i need to leave the room all day so i'm not near the growing plants.
Then i go in the room without breathing, open up a jar and walk out for a while, then i walk in and the whole
room smells like dank and it tastes like bananas.
