Early germination, semi-urgent questions.

I was germinating 4 purple widow and 2 south african kwazulu seeds. I was expecting the germing proccess to take a few days atleast but It's only been 30 hours or so and two of the Purple widow seeds germinated already.

So this morning i checked on them and kinda panicked and put them in this no name potting soil, which i used the last of. I was going to get good stuff today or tomorrow. I put them in styrofoam cups ,with holes in the bottom, on my window sill.

Problem 1: Will it mess up the plants if i change the grow medium when i transplant them to their perminent spot. I'll be buying some good soil from a hardware store near me.

Problem 2: I couldn't have germed them at a worse time. Outside it's all cloudy and sometimes showering and it's supposed to be like that all weekend and a bit more. Will the initial lack of sunlight mess up the growing proccess/ stunt their growth. I think it might. I'm concerned.

get good soil and have your whole operation ready tol go before you germinate again. No name potting soil will hurt in the long run.

Planning in advance is a good idea. Taking all potential circumstances that may affect your situation into account. Learn from this experience and dont germinate the seeds next time until you have everything in place. Cant answer your question regarding changing grow medium, but id say get some good stuff quick smart to put the others in when they split.

1. No, people transplant into different mediums all the time. The only problem with this is that the soil you just used MAY not be sterilized, so you MAY get some type of soil bug (I did when using a handfull of MG Moisture Control. BUT your little seedling is now trying to grow some type of roots, you cant transplant when it has no roots because you will most probably damage and kill the seedling. What you want to do now is let it grow in that cup so it can get some roots. Once it gets some roots the soil will hold together instead of falling apart and exposing the fraglie taproot. Don't rush it, root damage is permanent, it can always grow new roots but roots are actually pretty fragile.

2. No, it won't. Seedlings have enough energy/food within to keep them alive for a few days with no light. Some people don't even put their seedlings under a light until they are standing upright.
--- You could always get a CFL or two for now, that's plenty enough for a seedling.

So yeah, best thing to do now is when it pokes through the soil get a CFL on it (close), and wait for the plants to grow a little bit (so the roots take hold of the soil) so that when you transplant the dirt wont fall apart on you.

Your seedlings should be fine. Even on a cloudy day, they still get light. Just be a bit more prepared next time.

Thanks for the replys. I just bought some Pro Mix potting soil. When the otheres germinate i will use this. So i guess theres nothing to worry about, yet.

Hey Verde, thanks for the info. Rollitup won't let me PM. Incase i get soil bugs how did you get rid of yours? Also i have a newb question. At the place I bought the soil, i bought PRO MIX potting soil, there was also some Pro MIX organtic something soil. Do you think i should use that soil after they are done sprouting and i move them to the outdoor spot?

Yeah you can't PM until you get some rep or post count I'm not sure exactly what it is.

For the bugs, I got symphillids. I know that for sure they come from un-sterilized soil.

I don't understand what your asking 100% in the second question but: I don't know if that soil is sterilized, if it's really nice soil it probably is. I took from a big bag of cheap MG soil. If your planning on getting FFOF or something then use FFOF personally I love that shit. The plants love it. Just use whatever soil you want dude, it's all preference. The seedling should get enough roots in a beer 20oz at like 5 or 6 inches if it doesn't stretch out. Move it to the outdoor spot when it's the best time to do so.
