Its peoples Ego's. Ego's are like a bottomless hunger that must constantly be fed. The truth hurts the Ego more than anything and many people will defend their Ego's vehemently. No one knows they are doing it, they just can't believe anything that doesn't click with the world they have built around their ego's, to do so would cause chaos.
 
Yea, i posted this a couple of weeks ago. There was a discussion about it on npr also that was very interesting.

It does explain a lot. I know I'm guilty of it sometimes. And I'm pretty sure the two of yous are as well....
 
'i am relatively intelligent' and 'i hold false beliefs' are two conflicting thoughts that no one likes to have. we're all guilty
