false amber bc of lighting- a note for newbies like me

hey evverbuddy.

Just wanted to note a mistake I almost made that others might want to be aware of. I have a little berry ryder that is way overdue probably because of cold temps and I went to examine the trics of the disappointing buds and did it under a little 20x microscope lighted from below with an incandescent. Well, with just that incandescent back lighting, just about all the trics looked pretty amber, to the the point that I almost immediately cut it and cursed my whole grow. But the plant overall looked young to me and I went to the trouble of finding a neutral led flashlight and lit it from the top, and low and behold they were are all actually crystal clear. Now it's been out in the sun for another week and a half and the buds are twice as full and just starting to cloud. So you really have to have the right lighting when you're examining trics if you're making decisions based on that. I'm sure it's only newbies like me that wouldn't realize this, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Amazon has a pocket microscope with 60-120x mag with an led light at the mag site for 14 bucks... that would have saved you a world of stress.

And once you get going, you'll know exactly what day to cut down for specific strains. I always cut my gorilla glue #4 at 61 days, don't even bother looking at the Trichs

Yeah I get you.

The microscope is actually fine if I point an led at it along with the backlighting. And I'm not sure this particular grow could ever be true to a timed number, because it's been too weird. Cool temps throughout, switching back and forth between sun and CF, and has been outside full time since mid april here in ohio. So it's gone in slow motion, but it's really cooking right now. We're nearing 60 days of flowering on a plant that's supposed to finish in 65 days total from seed. Looks to be a respectable harvest for an auto in the end.

Some of my reserve moms finish in six weeks of flower,my best hash/shatter strain takes an easy ten though but it is sooo worth it.

Oh good you didnt harvest the whole thing. Trich's should be checked strictly under daylight 5-6k. Carefull, even those scopes with the built in LED will show amber under an HPS.

Oh yeah I'm sure this is true. In my case the incandescent underlighting didn't matter because once I used the LED too I could tell things were clear. But it did look a little yellowish-clear -- the color was off but since it was clear I could tell that's just because of the lighting. I'm a graphic designer. Lighting is EVERYTHING as far as color goes. People should be aware of this.

I get the sense from other folks that Berry Ryder should definitely have been done by now, that's why I was almost tricked by the bad lighting. I think it's just the odd nature of this grow (cool temps, indoors/outdoors/indoors/outdoors) that slowed things so much. I'm in the 8th week of flowering and I think it will be 9 or possibly 10 before we're done here.

Not complaining. I can see weight going on by the day.
