Fan carbon filter advice

Planning a future cfl grow space is 17" wide x 10" Deep x 55" high. There will be 8-10 inches at the top for the exhaust carbon filter. Important is that I want it to be stealth so carbon filter on the inside with the fan pulling through the filter.

Do you think a couple 150cfm pc fans and a homebuilt filter would work? Or do I need to buy duct boosters? I feel confident that I can make a good carbon filter, what I worry about is the ability of the fan to be able to suck through properly.:bigjoint:

Computer fans are pretty weak so your carbon filter would have to be really small, so you couldn't have that much airflow

Well its a small space, when I do the calculations id only need like 5cfm. Thats why Id like to hear people experience with fan filter combos. Home depot has like 80 cfm duct boosters, is that better than 2 150cfm pc fans?

Now, you are on the right track. Either an inline like that one linked or a 4" centrifugal fan will pull through a carbon filter. An axial type fan like the PC fans or booster fan don't do well with restrictions, so they won't work with the filter.

Carbon filters are the most effective form of odor control. Disregard that other guy, he's just talking out his ass.

Yeah he sounded like that. What do you mean linked? That fan is 6 inches long so 8-10 inches in length of diy carbon filter would be all I could fit in. Is that enough to filter the smell, with the fan pulling the air through the filter. I figure I can rig up some pvc fittings. I am just worried about space so trying to plan everything in advance. Thanks

By linked, I just meant the inline fan you hyperlinked to.

I can't tell you if it will be effective for your purpose since there are way too many variables. Judging by the length of it and assuming you use a thick bed of carbon in the filter, I'm guessing it would work well.

Yeah there would be 1"-2" of carbon.

Well, If its the skunk, or a smelly strain..

Then no carbon scrubber is gonna wipe out that odor.

The smell will still linger around.. and thats final.

Been doing this for a hell of a long time, and I know.

Just warning you ahead of time.

Yeah I have heard that before, Thanks. Anybody have experience with the loudness of that model? It would be going into a safe, in the closet. Thanks agian

I would think carbon filter and ona gel is better than ona gel alone

Your absolutely right my friend. They dont work.

Most new growers have this image of instantly removing the flowering smell with a carbon scrubber... and thats that.

They will help, but they WILL NOT get rid of the smell. End of Subject. :)

Hrm, carbon scrubbers dont work? I dont think I agree with that, not bases on opinion but experience. My 590cfm inline fan and 65 lbs carbon scrubber in my 5'x7' flower room does a swell job of getting rid of ALL odor. I ran super smelly northern lights haze (even smells strong during veg) + the scrubber/fan pulls air from the veg room & flower room both. no trace smell outside the op. Activated carbon works great (aside from forking up $ and energy for the refills). I even run little tiny febreze true air carbon scrubbers in my living space to quickly clean the odor of the cannabis I burn. If your op is within a decent negative static pressure and decent activated carbon filter, you should have no problem with odor… imho… end of subject =P

Hey the way I look at it, if you need a filter then buy something that has been proven. Its all about reliablity. I would have built one, but I was able to get a Can2600 for like 60 bucks. Peace of mind is priceless. I mated that to a small 83cfm fan from radioshack for 20 bucks, there is about a foot of 4" duct and it works like a charm.

seems like you have a real limited space, is there a way to get a bit more room? maybe build something slightly larger?
