Fan Options...

Ok.. so almost ready to get my closet ready to flower, and I'm gonna get a 400 watt hps from htgsupply....

What kind of fan do I need? I see inline fans, centrifugal fans, squirrel fans, computer fans etc...
4 inch? 6 inch? Kinda lost here..

My closet is 22.5 sq feet and 8 feet high, so about 180 cubic feet total. If I need the air exchanged only every 3-5 minutes, does that mean i only need like a 60 cfm fan for sufficient ventilation? Whats the best way to control the heat?

im using a inline duct booster fan to cool my 1000 watt light and it works pretty good. are you geting a aircooled hood? that will help if your worried about cooling it with a fan.

This was my biggest issue and decision. I was told a million things by a million people. So here's what I did...your space is a couple feet higher than mine, but shouldn't be much of a difference. Check out www.4hydro.com. Awesome awesome site, and they hook you up with discounts based on how much you order. I got my fan, my plugs, and my carbon filter, shipping paid and like 15 bucks off. Anyway, I got a sunleaves windtunnel 4in 200cfm fan. I was running it through my air cooled reflector, but 400w doesn't put out near as much heat as you think or people tell you it will (at least I haven't been above 80 degrees with the fan off for 15-30 min). I have my dr120 set up so that one of the flaps is half open and fresh air comes in from the window that's only about 2.5 feet away, so I don't even have to run it all the time. It may sound like not the best idea, but the kids are BLOWING UP and have no issues so far.

Big issue I kept hearing is "you need two fans". I'd like to call SHENANIGANS on this if you have a space as small as mine. This is just based on my few weeks experience, and it might change once I get bigger lamps/bigger area to work with. You're running 400w like me, so one will do for now, even one as small as mine. You can get a can fan that pulls about 170 cfm through, but not for the 125 bucks I got the sunleaves windtunnel on. Only drawback is that you're supposed to mount it to a wall or something. I didn't do that. I just strapped it up to my cross bars up top and fed the ducting right out the side. It works awesomely. The one thing I would recommend is 4in duct clamps. I was using duct tape, but having to redo it about every week. haven't had to touch it in 3 weeks since I got those clamps.

Hope that helps you out man. Good luck with the flowering! I'm hoping to start mine in a week or two!

You definitely want some kind of intake fan or your C02 levels will be very low. No matter what, you should have some kind of fresh air intake if you're not going to run C02 and it is a completely sealed environment.

For your 400w a 4" intake should be fine but if you plan to upgrade in the near future you might as well spend the extra $ on a 6" intake fan (400+ cfm) because it will come in handy.

Good luck :leaf:

IMO, since you are not running a sealed hood I would definitely add some kind of cool air intake.

Your closet is really tall, so you can probably get away with just venting the closet. If you're able to vent to an attic, you might be able to get away with this fan: http://www.htgsupply.com/Product-6in-Inline-Duct-Fan.asp
That fan will probably cool the room well enough, but you won't be able to add a carbon filter. If you have the money, look at the Can 6" high output fan. You can use a speed controller with it, it moves tons of air, and it will serve you well for years.

so you think i can get away with the 6 inch booster? it seems to be rated high enough to clear the room in a few minutes. how should i go about setting it up? i need to see some pics of a vent setup.. i might be able to get away with out having a carbon filter.
