FIRST GROW: 150 watt HPS, AF EasyRider

Thanks for following my first grow! Any advice is more than welcome.

The Setup:
2wx2lx4h Grow Box
4 autoflowering plants (lowryder #2 x ak47)
150 watt HPS light
carbon filter and inline fan
using soil (25% perlite 75%FFOF)
FF nutrient 3pack

The first question I have run into is one of stealth. Will one 150watt HPS light left on at 20/4 use up enough juice to draw attention to my small apartment?

150w will not draw attention to your apartment. That's less than 3 60 watt incandescent light bulbs. Consider switching light bulbs in the rest of your apartment to high efficiency CFLs and watch your energy use if you're really scared, but you can rock about a 1000 watt light for every bedroom without arousing too much suspicion, that's not to say it isn't better to remain on the safe side.

i think i might also add some CFLs for side lighting, at least during the veg period but maybe flowering too. i heard this will decrease the stretching.

grow cab 2x2x4 (mylar is on its way)

couple changes to the set up so far:
only going to do 3 plants now. i heard without proper wattage, the buds will not be tight enough.
i am adding five 25w cfls (3 veg/2 bloom til about day 21 then i will switch the ratio)

beans came in yesterday. they have been soaked and are now in some paper towels in a dark place.

Great idea! I would honestly recommend vegging them under cfl's because you can get them super close and your plants will be very short and bushy!! They when you throw them under the hps into flowering, use the cfl's as side lighting for sure!! It will only help make your buds swell more!! Your plant will shoot up and stretch in flowering so having a short bushy is ideal imho.

Day 5:

I was 3 for 3 for germination!
2 have sprouted and 1 has its first pair of true leaves (not the cotyledon)


this is the current set up: three 25 watt veg cfls on 24 hours. once they get a few days older, i will gradually add more cfls and then the 150w HPS when it gets closer to flowering.


this one is the furthest along. things are looking good!

i have a 80cfm inline duct fan attached to my carbon filter. i was just looking at the website and they say that this is not compatible with a carbon filter, yet i hooked it up anyway. will this work to filter out the smell effectively? my grow area is fairly small so i figured i'd be okay.

advice please!

I would assume it works if its still able to push air out of your grow box. Its just not as efficient as other fans..

day 8 report:

second true set of leaves have appeared on all plants
average temp is about 82-83. humidity around 30-35%.

i have decided to lst them when they get bigger.

more pics when they get a little bigger!

Probably not that big of a deal, if your worried about it then just pick up some pest spray from home depot or something similar..

i'll wait a little longer on that. hopefully i wont see anymore pests.

UPDATE- *lots of changes*

just ordered a Generation3 90watt LED UFO light! i will use this along with some side cfls for the rest of veg (~2weeks). then i will add the 150watt HPS to kick it into flower.

also started germinating 3 more beans. two more easy ryders and a freebie auto haze by dinafem. 6 plants total now.

this brings about one question:
will there be enough light for 6 autos? (150w HPS, 90w LED UFO, (2)25w 2700k CFL)

I think that would be great for 6 autos. The more lights the better obviously but being autos and short in nature I think your lighting situation is perfect.

Yea I agree, the more light the better but I'm sure it will work if you keep them short and stocky! They will have to be in smaller pots though..

i have them in party cups now but was planning on transferring them to 1 gal pots once i move them to the flower box. will those work?

Yea that sounds about right because I grew 2 plants in 3 and 5 gallon pots under about 200watts of cfls.. Got around 3 oz my first grow so it wasn't to bad at all.. Just keep those lights as close as you can, can't stress it enough!!
