first grow, nothern light babies

This is my first grow. Let me first start with a little bit about my babies. I have 6 babies growing in a static flow system. The roots are always in water and inside the water lies a pump that pumps oxygen up and to the roots. They are about 3 weeks old. I have them under 4 fluorescent lights( 2 warm white and 2 cool white) at 18/6. When i switch them over to 12/12, i am putting them under a 400 watt hps. My nutrients are Floragrow, Floramicro, Florabloom and some diamond nectar that came with the set. I'm using full strength solution according to the vegatative stage on the bottles. I fill them with distilled water and i change the water out every week or so. The ph is usually under 7(I dont have an exact meter to measure it).

this is a picture of the roots.....

these are a few pics of the babies......

there are a few things that I am worried about and was wondering if anyone can help.

1. Is spacing an issue? I know when I flower them I have to move them to a bigger place with more room. I am planning to do that with the clones when i clone them. So as soon as I find out which are females, would it be a problem to keep them in this system as is at the vegatative stage?

2. Some of the leaves have some brown spots. This is a closer picture of one of them.....

is this common or is it something i have to worry about? is there something i can do to fix it?

3. and finally, is it a big deal if some of the leaves get in contact with each other? ive read that people trim some of the fan leaves and since its my first grow, i dont want to do anything drastic.

I would appreciate any help, THANKS A MILLION!

Hi MARY LOVE

1. spacing might become an issue... unless you FLOWER NOW.... IF YOU DO FLOWER NOW. I suspect that you will need to put more air stones in your reservoir. If you keep them in that system for much longer, the roots are going to get tangled together and separating the plants will become a problem..

2. This is not GREAT... you need to keep a close eye on the spots.. how is the NEW growth? You can tell how a plant is doing by looking at the new growth.. NEW growth should be larger and more vigorous than previous nodes/leaves.

3. do not trim fan leaves :)

question

please show me more pictures of your grow system
where did you get it
how much did it cost
can you take a picture of the inside
are you checking your pH and ppms daily

i like the simplicity of your grow!

peace can not be a goal.. unless PEACE is your way of achieving this goal...

i bought it off ebay. i think it was something like 30 or 40 bucks. i check the pH daily, but i dont have an exact ph meter so all i know is that its under 7.

here are a few pics of the system without the plants....

the second picture is the system put together.

It's working pretty good so far. The air pump pumps through the little blue thing and it lets out the oxygen, but it sometimes moves around in the water, so i tapped the tube down to hold it in place.

So here is my plan...
I want to clone all of them first and find out which are females.
Let's say half are female(I CAN ONLY HOPE!!), i'd have to kill off three of them so i dont think space will be an issue with 3 plants.
After that, i'll clone the mothers again and then flower those babies in an ebb n flow system(which is under construction, somewhat, and has more space).
It's at 3 weeks veg. when should i clone to check for mothers?
let me know what you think of my plan...... it is a work in progress

What's the system called?

I would add 2 more airstones and 1 more air pump.....

it will help a lot!
cheers

Can anyone help? the problem seems to be spreading. It looks like rust on some of the leaves. The new growth is doing fine. I just recently increased the nutrient dosage, so i think that might be the problem. does anyone else think differently?
here are a few pics.

ppm - parts per million...

it refers to the NUTRIENTS(salts) in the water.

This is vital information when growing hydro or aeroponically.

You can BUY a meter on line.

well i just finished changing out the water. The brown color on some of the babies scared me, so i decided to scale back a little on the nutrients. Hopefully that will fix the problem. I've been researching some ppm meters. is there any specific range it should be at during this stage or any other stage?

also, i enjoy any comments or concerns. I posted this up just for that, so if you can, HOLLA!

YO, dog!!! First of all, nice set up man. I've taught you well..But yea, about those spots, it's probably a nutrient burn. You should add a little less nutrients in your system than what the bottle tells you. Some plants don't do good with change, so just add balance it out as you go. But yea, i'll be keeping up with this, so keep adding new pics. Later bro

I had the same system for my last grow and it worked real well."gotta love ebay" The only problem i had,is it was getting really crowded, so this time im using that one with only 3 plants in the system and it will be in a spare closet under CFL's.
In that system i had excelent root growth but it became one massave root ball. "they where all tangled together"

UPDATE!!!: well the babies are doing quite well. After i lowered the nutrient levels, things seemed to be looking ALOT better. I also renovated the room a little bit to put the children closer to the mylar so the light reflecting off can work better for the plants. I've been spraying the plants with distilled water twice a day(i dont know if it should be done more or less??). Everything seems to be going well. There about 4 weeks old now.

Here is one pic, i've been trying to put up others but it doesnt seem to be working..... or it may be that im a little under the influence :joint:

so here is my current situation. I'm going to be gone for about 2 and a half weeks. My current static flow system only holds 3 gallons and I was afraid that it might run out of water by the time i get back. SOooooooo..... I put the top on a new 10 gallon bucket and filled it with water. I added another airstone and another pump to it. I put 8 gallons in it so far and its not completely to the top. But, I cant fill it to the top cause it has 2 little holes toward the top of the bucket.

Now, #1 since the rockwool wont be in water the whole time, will that be a problem? the water level is eventually going to lower a little bit. the roots are always going to be soaked in water, but i dont know if this is a big deal if the rockwoll is?

#2. how HIGH:joint: will i have to put up the lights so the plants wont get burned for the next 2 weeks or so? The biggest one is about 8 inches tall or so. And they are 4 weeks old. Anyone have a good estimate?

Here is a picture of the old system and the new one that i made. LET ME KNOW WHAT YA'LL THINK!
