First grow, wouldn't mind a little feedback.

Hey folks, this is my first true attempt at growing a little house herb and since i'm the only one in on it I figured it would be a good idea to pick the brains of the people who had been around the block a time or two.

I've germinated many a seed but I've never gotten anything like this plant. They all usually die or stop growing within the first couple of weeks. I must admit this plant is getting a little ahead of me because i'm still learning the in's and the out's of growing so I just wanted some advice from the pros.

The seed came out of a mixed bag that I've collected over the years. I assume thats why the others did so poorly but this seed if from the same lot so I'm stumped as to why this plant is doing so well comparatively. I've got it in Miracle Grow Potting soil which I've heard is a no no but it was cheap and since i'm college student's time and financial budget I figured it would be my best bet. The seed was germinated about 3 weeks ago and this is what i've got. Let me know if you see anything that I can fix or anything I should keep doing.

Thanks guys,

Red.

How far away is that light? She seems a little stretched to me so if you can get that light closer without burning her it would be good.
A lot of people grumble bout mg soil but if that's what you got well it is what it is and don't let people bully you about it. Good luck with
your grow.

Villa is on spot with the MG comment, I am using also, simply because it's what I had, and didn't expect my first grow to last this long anyway.
I had grown before on the west coast, warm climate in ground, and they always grew like 'weeds', but i had zero knowledge and apparently, zero females too.
MG seems to be doing fine for my first potted grow outdoors, and first 2 months, had MG general purpose ferts. too.
Villa is also right, pic looks like light is high, and they do look stretched. See if you can lower your light some, but hold your hand under between leafs and light just to make sure you're not TOO close (heat wise).
But be careful....... Someone else had a thread recently, was also college student, and was at the point when the realization of size, smell, and care was becoming an issue. They will start to smell when they go into flower, and IDK what your situation is............

If you want to keep up, or maybe even ahead of the plant, start reading the indoor grow section, and you'll see the complex stuff you'll be headed towards: lights, fans, filters for odor, timers, etc.

I'm NOT trying to deter you, but right now I'm kinda in the same place- got 2 four+ foot plants, that I hadn't planned on, but now, want to see it through to the end and see what I can finish with.
Welcome, and Good Luck!

Thanks for your advice, i'll move it closer to the light and see what I can get. Im in a closet so ventilation is pretty much a no go but I've been monitoring the temps and they're just below 80 so those should be fine unless we have any more heat waves which we shouldn't, but who knows. Any word on when might be a good time to switch to 12/12, it's about 10 inches tall at the moment.

cheers,
Red

The Light is about 24 inches away from the top. It's a 150 watt HPS so the heat isn't too bad but when you're really close it's pretty warm.

Now is a good time to top or FIM your plant. The idea is that by trimming off some of the top of the plant
you force it to grow more side branches. A FIM cut done correctly can pretty much guarantee you will have 4 main colas
instead of one. You certainly have the space to let her branch out. You will yield more and also take up more space.

All seems to be going good, keep it up and the more light the better, especially when she gets bigger

No need to spend 20$ on a bag of "gourmet" medium. That will come later. MG does the trick for very little $. Plant looks a bit stretchy.

Have your considered the odor she'll give off during flowering? Don't wait till your house reeks, get it figured out and taken care of now.

Smell shouldn't be a problem where i'm growing. I smoke in here all the time and so do my 3 roommates.

Hey Folks, I've switch my room over to 12/12 and i'm starting to show some signs of sex. I'm not quite sure which direction it's headed so I would pop back in and pick your brains, maybe your eyes can pick something up that mine aren't. It's been on 12/12 for about a week now and I know if I just waited another week I would probably know for sure but I'm impatient and I thought you guys might like to see how the plant has come along.

I think it would be a lot easier to help if you were able to get a closer pic.....where the branches begin on the stem

It looks like a female, but just incase its not very hard to tell if you see little like sack/pod things then its a male, but if you see white hairs starting to form its a female, also looks really good, I heard cutting the top is good to let branch out. I planted some last may and strong winds blew my blind over ontop of one of my plants and broke it in half when it was still young and it healed pretty quickly and branched out a lot.

As MojoRison said a closer picture would make it much easier to tell. Also, at 1 week of 12/12 it might be a little early to tell! From my experience (and truth be told im pretty much a noob) it takes a little closer to 2 weeks to see the earliest signs. So another week might tell you a lot! Looking good though!
