first time grower

So for my set up, i have a fish tank covered in tinfoil, one 42 wat cfl bulb, and 8 plants in miracle grow potting mix. Some questions I have are, how often do i water? and is tap water fine? do i NEED a ventilation system? Should I be doing anything else? Any tips would be appreciated, and I'll probably have more questions soon! thanks guys

I've been reading up on the stickes, still couldn't find out when the soonest you can find out if thier male or not, also what the lighting to darkness ratio new plants need.
