i gave them water + food today.will that get them to swell back up? maybe my oscilating fan is blowing to hard on them and drying out the buds?

Maybe you should stop squeezing the crap out of your buds @ 5 1/2 weeks. Just give them water and let them go through their cycles. They may very well have different stages where the calyx's are swelling and they may seem like they are soft to you, but really it's just your buds growing and they may firm back up later. I wouldn't expect rock hard buds in the end from a few CFL's.

The water is what helps maintain the cellular structure. Without it the whole plant will go limp. Another problem could be a lockout. Sometimes problems in the root system will not allow the uptake of water/nutrients. This is usually from over watering and not enough oxygen getting to the root system to maintain a healthy root ball. This can also happen from the plant being root bound. You mentioned that they were in small containers.
