Think about how much video games progressed in the past 50 years. We went from Pong and Pacman to these crazy, epic worlds filled with digital characters with their own personalities and life stories. We can log online and interact with millions of players across the world. We’ve evolved from controllers to being able to use hand gestures to play game. That’s pretty damn cool.

The next coolest thing in video games most people think of would likely be virtual reality. Games where you’re actually inside the video game world. Oculus Rift and some other companies are already working on that. At the 2014 MHacks, one team created a Harry Potter simulation using the Oculus Rift and Nintendo Wiimote technologies. Here’s a game play video of it in action.
You see the player flying around a low-bit version of Hogwarts.
Imagine what we come up with another 50 years. When technology advances, it’s going to be ridiculous. You’re going to be able to walk around in a completely different universe as a completely different person. You can live as many different lives as you want. Live out your dreams. Walk around in the world of Skyrim and shoot virtual fireballs out of your virtual hands.
You’re either thinking “Wow, that sounds awesome. I can’t wait for the future!”, or “Damn, we’re screwed”, and both are understandable.
Even today, there are people with serious video addictions. Having a virtual reality world where you can be anyone you want would sound appealing to a lot of people and many would probably abuse it. Combine that with stress and real life problems. It’s imaginable and likely that the virtual world would become reality for many people and they would develop a heavy dependency.
Chances are, many would be against virtual reality video games and try to make them illegal. There will probably be a lot of debate on the topic. People would argue that they’re immoral or bad for the children.
I personally can’t wait to take a huge bong rip, put on my helmet and go virtual reality scuba-diving or go to a virtual Kid Cudi concert. I realize there could be a lot of people who’d abuse it, but the War on Drugs has proved to us prohibition does not work. As long as there is a demand, there will suppliers. A black market will form and someone will declare “A War on Virtual Reality Helmets” (sound familiar).
There could be many benefits to virtual reality video games. First of all, that’d be the coolest thing ever and so much fun. It’d be great for people that were injured or seriously ill and are bed ridden. It’s therapeutic nature can be helpful for people with serious trauma or veterans with PTSD. Simulations can have tons of medical benefits, like helping people facing their fears or helping someone relax.
Instead of spending money on arresting virtual reality helmet dealers (drug dealers), we should put that money into educating the public and give them reasons to do other things besides playing video games (smoking a j). That way, people realize the importance of taking things in moderation and we get to enjoy futuristic video games while smoking dank, futuristic bud.
What do you guys predict? What do you think virtual reality video games are going to be like? Do you ever see it becoming so serious that the government has to interfere?
