Good questions about cfls!!

HEY How you doing i was wondering if some of the guys on here could answer my questions about cfls?
1. Mixed spectrum? should i go with a mix spectrum or cool white or 6500 k for veg only or run a few day light cfls with the cool whits in veg mode. i was kinda thinking 6500 k all the way through veg and the daylight ones for flower.

2. what is the most efficent bulb size to buy when using cfls?

3. i was thinking i should put cfls all around the plant? would this help?

4.should i just go to walmart and get the cfls or order them online what is cheaper?

5. would making a hood for the cfls be in my interest or should i just hang them everywhere?

6. and how many cfls, or how much cfl wattage would i need for a 4x4 tent area

advice and help would greatly be apprechated.

I get my 23W CFL's from the grocery store, it's the cheapest place around here.
Imo, a mixed spectrum is a good idea. I use a 3:1 ratio of 6500K to 3000K for veg, flower is the other way around. But for flower I highly recommend HPS (with some CFL's as supplemental lighting).

Surrounding the plant(s) with light is always good.

A hood or reflectors helps, so yes get something.

Foa 4X4 tent.....as many as you can get in there.

As for the Wattage. I like the 23W, they're cheap and plentiful. You get better coverage because you're using multiple light sources instead of just one, and no "single point of failure".

Rule of thumb I use. Minimum, 100 (real)W for one plant, and at least an additional 50W for every extra plant.

1. Mixed is fine, Just to clarify 6500k is daylight bulbs, 2700k is soft warm or something, Veg with more 6500k then 2700k, Vice versa during flowering

2. Not sure

3.Yes! put them everywhere you can without burning the plant

4.if you like me and dont like to wait for crap ship, pay the little extra for convenience

5.depends, alot of people make hoods/reflectors as did I, to help give a little wasted light back. It worth it if you can keep temps down.

6. as many as you can afford to buy, Just make sure you able to deal with temp conditions. more lights/ more heat
 
I'm pretty sure the most efficient wattage are the 42W/150W equivalent, or so I have been told.

I run 800 actual watts of mixed, 23's would be too many bulbs...but I went a bit overboard.:bigjoint:

23=100.....hmmmmmm??....I think the 23's are more efficient.peace

I don't use any fixtures, each pair of bulbs are hung individually and fully adjustable in height...from a sheet of plywood using cup holder screw mounts.

In this way I can customize to each plant, fixtures do not allow the benefit of surrounding plants. I also just bought a pair of 68W 2700K, which are too big imo for the 300W equivalent output.

Sounds cool.....if you've seen my fixtures and surrounding plants you might reconsider that belief:wink:...in my experience the higher wattage cfl's get hotter and don't last as long as the 23-26watters.Like Hugo said above no single point of failure,a 300w loss is big:eyesmoke:

Those are the mixed bulbs I use, was mistaken earlier when stating 150 equivalent. For their size, they perform better and take up less room than a 68W. At 9 bucks each and 8,000 rated hours, they last a good year.

I like my set-up, can grow seedlings next to shrubs in 5 gals

40=200 @ 2800 lumens...little more efficient.Thanks for the info.I assume their a little hotter,I can honestly:) put my hand on the 23w 2700k bulbs,the 42's I could not.
Ive had some of my 23w bulbs almost 2yrs running 12/12:).....anyway,to each his own:),whatever works for you:).......blah blah blah:)peace

AND THANKS TOO EVERYBODY WHO RESPONDED AND GAVE ADVICE! I want the best medicine for the buck so i am most likley not gonna flower with cfls. i want a 4x4 tent witha 600 watt HID and a smaller tent with a custom DIY cfl fixture/hood i think id be spending under a grand and getting over a grand wortha meds if i do it right i think. im using these meds myself btw not selling.
 
I use 16 23w cfl's on one fixture and 12 23w + 4 14w 23in t5 on another.Don't listen to the haters, THEY BE JEAEAALOOOUUSS:cool:

I could easily have purchased an entire 600W HPS/MH fixture with the amount of $$ already invested in CFL's.

But after doing a side by side experiment with an HPS vs. CFL's, I did not find enough advantages to justify making the switch.

So I keep adding CFL's, and most folks don't even know they emit UV as well.

"Since CFLs are designed to provide general illumination, the majority of the light emitted by CFLs is localized to the visible region of the spectrum (approximately 400-700 nm in wavelength). In addition, typical CFLs emit a small amount of UVB (280-315 nm), UVA (315-400 nm) and infrared (> 700 nm) radiation."

Yes, I concur, So my grow space is a walk in 7'x4'6" space...for Veg...
I do not even think this is over kill [actual wattage]-->
5-65 watt 6000K----------------------------325 w
4-40 watt aquarium lamps-------------------160 w
2-32 watt 6000 K--------------------------- 64 w
32-23 watt mixed spectrum [24 are 6500K]--736 w
Equals-----------------------------------= 1295 watts total...

And, no I didn't start out to have more CFL's than anyone, it just worked out that way... Room got more plants, and yes, I would just add another fixture...
To each his own, if it works... whatever...
Too many CFL's is an 'Oxymoron'
