Growing clones in 6" rockwool cubes WITHOUT a system?

i was wondering how long you can grow clones in 6" rockwool cubes before you HAVE to put it in a hydroponic system? I can see the roots that come out of the bottom of the cube die from being exposed to dry air. is this okay for the plant or does it have to go into a system asap?
