Growing in the rockies

Im new to the forum. First forum I have registered with. I want to grow outdoor this year. Last year I grew indoor but the buds were way small. I think I did not have proper lighting. I was on a budget with limited space. I figure outdoor costs low and tons of space. Plus I like outdoor buds better. But I live in Utah. Right in the rockies. It can get cold at these higher elevations and I plan on growing in a canyon. (only uninhabited area in the county that I can think of). I would like advice on any other places that would be good, and if I can grow with the conditions I have. It is also very dry here. I was planning on finding a spring and planting near it so I dont have to water and limit the trips there. Is planting near a spring ok? or will it drown the plants?
