Has any one tried aquatic water conditioners for tap water for hydro/dwc

I was wondering if anyone has ever had any luck using water conditioners for fish tanks to clean up tap water for use in hydro/dwc. I'm saving up for a reverse osmosis water treatment and currently use distilled. Thanks
